good job on the latest sketches, i really like it, i think the head is a tad too big, not by much but its giving me that "its a bit off" vibes, i know you know what i mean, hope to see it painted and finished!

alrightey, spent a bit of time polishing this up; need to get back to a steady schedule. I wanna kinda mix my brute force approach with some sophistication. So like, drawing meticulously maybe some hogarthe drawings, then doing them from memory, something like that. Also get back into some gestures and continue refining the head drawing stuff.

Watched two really nice movies recently, The Tree of Life which had some stunning visuals that i thought were just key to the color and light i love, and My Friend Dahmer, which was well... Incredibly tasteful and well written for a film on a serial killer. Man they had such good cinematography i wished i could have just studied every little frame. I'll probably do that at some point is just get out a favorite film of mine and go frame by frame and practice and learn the storyboarding of it all, and stylzing simple value sketches in 2-3 values. So much to take in so little time...

And here's where all the study starts paying off! I love the gesture, and the unique color scheme.

Darth Dawckward: Thanks my man! Yea it's done, i just added some speckles, you can see it on my DA, though its not terribly different ;) the background is emulating an unfinished Waterhouse painting ;) This is a poor photo of it

Tyger: Thanks very much my man! Post some stuff if you're up for it!

So getting back to a schedule; I tried to do a more meticulous lay in for these hand studies. Like using straight lines in a linear contour drawing, you kind of ghost your hand over the form you see, predicting how to simplify the contours into a straight line. I was using an HB pencil, like the side of it which is new for me, as most the time i use like 6b, but i actually felt i had more control with a pencil than my tablet for once.

Two of these hands are from reference and one is from memory. I did one, then one from memory, then drew it again a few hours later. You can essentially apply the linear contour thing to everything, its like an envelope that the rest of the drawing will fit inside. Hopefully i can get quick with it so i can draw the volume i want, but you know, if im accurate, i dont see what good volume will do in improving lol.

Need to get back at gestures... noted.

Why did you draw the hand so large?!

Form my experience, when stuff get's that big, it starts to get really hard to follow the correct proportions and you can get too bogged down by small inconsequential details!

I recommend drawing those hands 5x smaller and 10x more!

Hirvios: Thanks my man, I thought about what you said today, then i remembered how much fun i had doing those thousands of head drawings. I think i need to put a nail on the coffin with this one, and do 1000 riley head lay ins, from simple angles like front on and three quarters at least to get it memorized so i have a nice template to work with.

I cant tell you how many wonky weird things i draw just laying in a basic face. I drew a face straight on today from ref and its just all skewed and shit! I need to work this out and get it solid. getting the symmetry is really tough for me and once i get this sorted out it'll make things a fuckload easier

yoooo fdeodika, your hand gave me the feeling something was off  so i doubles checked  structure and found some stuff id recommend to start with the wedge shape of the base of the hand, or keep the base of the fingers always in the back of your head also their length relative to each other, since everything is in idfferent perspectievs and the pinky fingers seems strangely long or floating, the base of the fingers isnt "attached" something to lookout for!

keep doing you man, those portrait grind are awesome, i wouldve used them to shade them from imagination to test light schemes and shadow shapes!

good luck :D

Hey Dawkward, thanks for the critique and i understand what you're getting at; This was a Hogarthe copy and he exaggerates the perspective and forms of things to help you remember things more, here's a very close copy to the original, and hogarthe doesnt seem to use the wedge shape to build this particular hand. He does it with a lot of foreshortened hands so you can see the hand folds and forms.

Hogarthe is criticized a lot of the way he exaggerates, but i've found a lot of value in it over the years for remembering key shapes

thats actually not true fedodikia i own hogarths dynamic hands book the first chapter is all about structure! which your drawing lacks! really think you should worry more about understanding the principles instead of just copying them, still everyone works differently btw hogarths calls the part you didnt draw the palmar structure, since you raerly draw over and through shapes i think this is an area you could improve on! anyway i was just trying to convey what really helped me to understand hands sorry if i offended you!

also hogareths famous rythims arent in your copies which is why the drawing looks so flat!

cant wait to see more stuff from ya man

Dawkward: hey thanks bro, ill take what you said into consideration next time i get hogarthe back out, and i wasn't offended by what you said so dont sweat that

Just a few more today, gonna try to get more in tomorrow lol; watching a few vids in between helps a lot, at this point i feel like i 80% get the rhythms in theory. Im kinda struggling the jaw to ear area but i can figure it out tomorrow. Its gonna be the lineweight that trips me up but itll be cool once i get it down haha

Hope these show up, the attatchment thing is being funny. So did about about 50 trave over photos today, also supplementing with video tutorials to help get the logic of the rythms in my head. I can do some of these without scratchy lines, and I'll be getting back to the paper ones tomorrow, so im at about 160/1000 so far; Speed should pick up and ill hopefully have them all done by before saturday

Dawkward: Haha, i dunno tbh. I just wanna draw faces right without skewing the proportions and these are really getting it out of my system! I also just realized I think the reason no one was crazy about my last piece is because the lighting, while pretty, is unclear, i mean in some places its believable but its mostly inconsistent and from now on ill make sure to use a reference or at least something to guide the lighting of a piece. But i don't know how people perceive stuff tbh, if thats like a conscious thought that the lighting is unrealistic.

On the heads im up to about 200/1000, pretty intense. I'm probably gonna work on some gesture stuff either during or after i do these. Man, being able to draw a consistent head is a satisfying feeling, and even just looking at some of these pen drawings gives me hope that I too, can draw correct and well placed features on command, even if genericly. The more i do, the more i see how wrong things can go, and how even the initial circle for the cranium is crucial to get right and consistent as everything else is built on that.

I've also learned that i deeply hate measuring things, and i like more "feeling" if something is right or wrong. That may also explain why i have drawn so big on paper, as most my process is not based on measuring but feeling the proportions instead of measuring them thoughtfully.  And like intense repetition seems to give me a more reliable feeling of what is correct. I'm certainly willing to do it, and its not like i have anything better to do lol

and i may get into some simple portraiture soon to apply this stuff, not sure the specifics but it should be satisfying if i can do a nice lay in and get a decent looking portrait without too much effort in like charcoal

Finally starting to see some of these proportions coming together on these. Cant imagine how tight they'll be at 1000 :)

Also going to my first life drawing session tomorrow, kinda nervous; Will technically be the first time I've been in the same room as a naked person before :O Well I guess if you're a baby in the bathtub with another baby that counts so maybe not the first lol

350/1000

Nathan fowkes portrait book is very very nice, has a lot of great instruction on lighting, riley rythms and what not to do in portraiture. This osama looking sketch i did is a sorolla study; I ordered some A paris pencils thatll hopefully be here soon since that's what they use at Watts. Jeff is keeping me alive these days, so much inspiration, here's to moar stuff!
