RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 04-20-2015 there's this mystery material i wanna paint... i see many of my characters wearing it, kinda like a mix of metal, hide, and lacey cloth with lots of swirls everyhere. It's really dark and course but sometimes soft... i must figure it out! RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 04-21-2015 its good to bang yer head on your wacom every now and then... RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 04-22-2015 some obviously shorter studies from today... but they were lots of fun! nother long one tomora then i might start doin a folio piece... RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 04-23-2015 moar studies to sink yo teeth intooo next month gonn be hittin enviros and drawing harrrd RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 04-24-2015 heeey the first one is a rough composition idea for a portfolio piece, i'm gonna doa tooon more research on it tho, and planning it's gonna be a fanart of the character hilde from soul calibur, and obvs the face will look a hell of a lot more like a womanhehe. Also the last study was like 8 hrs was pure hell near the end lol hrhrhehrhehee RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 04-25-2015 here's a WIP of some fanart! gonna sloooow cook this one hehehehehhehehehehehehe RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 04-26-2015 continued WIP and a jeff watts study RE: Fedodika the Koala - Adam Lina - 04-26-2015 Hey nice study of Jeff Watts. Have you heard of Nicolai Fechin? Hes a big influence on Jeff. RE: Fedodika the Koala - RickRichards - 04-27-2015 Wow, you´re truly dedicated! Keep posting man! I see Hilde from Soul Calibur there haha and i´ve seen somewhere Sophitia too. RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 04-27-2015 adam; thanks bud i went and gotta a couple of his pics i'll probably study em soon! Rick; uea i did tira too, i don't think ppl recognized her because i drew her with a wierd skin tone. fan art is cool because you don't have to design, i think i'm kinda bad at design now, as nothing i can come up with now looks as interesting as the characters I made as a child. I'm sure i can work on that though! thanks! oh and amys in there too somewhere The colors in the hilde piece aren't gelling quite like i want em to, but using ref has been a game changer definately... gonna be drawing on paper alot next month! RE: Fedodika the Koala - pindurski - 04-27-2015 Hey Fedodika, thanks for stopping by my SB. You are asking for some crits, so perhaps I can offer some feedback you might find helpful. Let's start with your line drawing anatomy work. Maybe I am assuming wrong, but it looks like you are rushing to get done as much as possible (something we are all guilty of:)... slow down! Your line work is super sketchy... slow down. Draw s l o w. Understand and think about the lines you throw down. There is a time and place for sketchy stuff like when you are blocking out a painting... but do yourself a favour and take your time with the studies and work on your craftsmanship. Be proud of each thing you draw... even if it is a head... get the lines and angles right. Colour. You seem to start all your paintings on the same grey background and as a result each painting has the same dullness to it. Experiment by tinting your canvas with a shade that is actually part of your painting. Also, I am assuming you are rushing here as well. Slow down again and thoughtfully work out your values and hues. Part of slowing down means keeping zoomed out until you absolutely HAVE to zoom in. Watch Noah Bradley's session on LevelUp... that crazy bugger stayed zoomed out 90% of the time! Not zooming in helps you evaluate the painting as a whole for as long as you can.... I think this might help you. Be patient, work hard, but more importantly work smart and be thoughtful about what you are doing! :) RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 04-28-2015 pind: wow thanks for the writeup man; of course, on point with everything hehe; yea that's why i've been doin these longer studies, to force myself to take the time and not rush, not rush. Tryin tryin erryday to get better at not rushin, i gotta get outta that speedpaint mentallity and do the longwork because that's what helps you be fast! i appreciate the tip on the colored background, that makes the block in phase much less flaccid than usual, especially hitting the canvas with some really tinted cyan color gets alot of good blending early on. Yea i do tend to scribble alot because i'm not proud/fond of the content i draw, because i don't really know what to draw; But i feel like if i just stick to tropes and employable stuff from here on out i won't have to think about it too much hehe. However, i do have a desire to draw knights, dragons, and hot ladies, i feel kinda weird that everyone claims that's not fulfilling. pff noah bradleys a jerk with a chip on his shoulder, just look at that fuckin haircut he's got; although i wished i weren't so detail oriented, he's got a great point talking about how most of his paintovers are just value simplifications; I love that smooth value transition he's acquired through his studies and man i want that, so i'll give his technique more of a shot! oooh how i await the day where i can have that smooth low contrast look and it's just bangin, but subtle... ~11ish hrs into the hilde piece, the study gave me some ideas of some colors i can add to the darker areas cuz i hate things just going that flaccid black in a piece... uuuh its gonna take forever to get away from the digital high contrast look but so be it! i'm also uploading the sketch of hilde i never rendered, as i felt the composition was kinda cramped RE: Fedodika the Koala - Lyraina - 05-03-2015 Your productivity is so crazy, I don't even know ... do you sleep? Eat? Like, at all? 0_0 So fun watching you grow and improve like crazy. As for the latest piece, I think it would be cool to see some more reflections - some of the red banner in her helmet maybe, or some blueish from the sky (like in your study). To add some more variety to the green, since armor like this picks up quite some colors from its environment. Keep it up Koala! RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 05-21-2015 lyrona: thanks heeh, yeeah i hope it'll pay off some day, like literally; I'm coming up on my second anniversary of doing this 10+ hrs a day in june 20ish I think. We'll see if the two year to pro myth (highly doubt it) holds up or if it'll be another soul crushing, cruddy year of staring at a computer for no pay nom nom. yeea i'm not gonna work on that piece, too much of a headache huuu, but i appreciate the input! Well this is what i've done since i last posted. I cracked into my favorite concept art from Final fantasy, Marko, Alex P, and many others i can't remember. I tried to do a design each day and only did less than 10 paintings this month, they are all arranged chronilogically, so you can see my design language and lineweight develop overtime. And yea, i will agree with whoever said that drawing is like 80% of this RE: Fedodika the Koala - LaleAnn - 05-22-2015 Hey man, lots of dedication here, that's all good for you! :) Now, I'm joining on what Pindurski said a little earlier but I'd like to add one little piece of advice if I may :) Maybe it's just me, but apart from maybe rushing a bit too much, I see very little hard brush strokes in there. You seem to be using a lot and principally a very soft brush (which is fine on a certain level). I know going soft might make you feel more comfortable cuz nothing is going to have clear edges and so you it keeps you away from actually "committing" to a frank, bold stroke. Don't keep it fuzzy and don't be scared. How about trying to use ONLY a very hard brush for a little while? Block in hard colors and only hard shapes and see what it looks like! Experiment and stay away from that soft or smudge brush. At first it'll seem tricky and hard to make it look "smooth" but it will actually force you into "wiring" your brain to see your colors, shapes and (very important and overlooked by many people including myself) edges in a clearer, more "methodic" way. You will learn to "translate" those hard shapes and colors into something more subtle, without needing any soft brush. (squinting now and then while using this technique is the best way to know if you're right or wrong ;) ) Trust me, your paintings would definitely gain a lot with a bit more "boldness" in your strokes. Hope this helps and that you'll try ;) Cheers! RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 05-22-2015 Hey lale ann thanks for the write up, i've had quite a few people tell me a similar thing and only now am i accepting it and really gonna do something about it! I reall appreciate all the critiques and assblasting i can get because i need some guidance i guess, i have the motivation i feel, just need somewhere to put it. Anyways, here's a study i did i tried to use the hard round brush only and a little texture and blur here and there, i'll try to focus on using just that for a while and see how it works out! RE: Fedodika the Koala - Amit Dutta - 05-22-2015 Ok, so now that last piece is hitting a better target for edges. Keep that up! When you attack a specific problem you improve, and so now the hard word. (Monkey shakes the Koala down from hiding way up in the trees) the way you do hands and proportions really needs work mate. Get some studies going on that asap! Doing stylised imagination characters is all great, but they all suffer from the same lack of fudamentals. Too large hands, off proportions in general, pose and gesture issues, anatomy anatomy anatomy. If you want to be a pro character artist, you have to nail heads, hands and feet, and proper from observation gestures and anatomy. I've seen some great stuff in your old work, done from reference that is pretty damn good. I think you seem to have a koala brain fart once you get to applying any learning from studies so start doing more of them really focusing on construction and proportion and then most importantly APPLY from memory again. I think this is the bit you aren't practicing, the from memory bit. Bang out a few hundred in the next month or so. That's just 5 simple line and construction studies a day and 5 from memory right after. If you have been doing them but just not posting then ignore this :) Keep it up! RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 05-22-2015 thanks again amit, always on point 100%! i'll be working on all that for sure, i tried to do this nude painting from my mind to test my knowledge of things, trying to use hard brush and what not, was quite challenging, and i know the arm is stiff >.>; i totally see what you mean with the proportions and hands i've been slacking on the hands especially, trying to take in all that knowledge of design in a short time; my proportions and overal gestures have gotten pretty crass Yea, my biggest issue is i do none of my imagination stuff as an application it's just kinda whatever stuff; i bet i could make something really cool if i did some concentrated studies and applied them after, as i can get those to look pretty accurate at least. The problem is just deciding what to draw, i can't make up my mind, everything i draw is kinda disjointed and random; but maybe i can make that my thing I spend too much time studying for the sake of it, because i know i can do well with reference, gotta change that lol. gotta COMBINE the reference and studies to get forward pshh, if that's what i gotta do, i'll doooo eet! Maybe if i just learn the fundamentals it'll sort itself out, can't thank you enough amit, i want all the crits and guidance i can get, i'm tired of just bein a lil FUCKBOY I got so much to do... lol RE: Fedodika the Koala - StardustLarva - 05-22-2015 Hey there, Koala friend! I guess I'll go with what the others have said about the application of your studies and such. It might be me, but I think the hand in that figure painting you last posted is a bit big. Could be me, though, I'm honestly an absolute beginner when it comes to human anatomy, heh. Best of luck with your future studies and such, man, we'll be rooting for you! RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 05-23-2015 heeehooo haha thank you mister beedle! you are quite correct, and i appreciate the support! was quite unfocused today, here is a bewt study and a new WIP I'd appreciate any crits before i begin the rendering, but i may see alot of mistakes tomorrow anyways |
