Thanks man, actually, those are not from life. It's more like some adjourned ideas (20 years ago pictures i took and left sitting in an old box). Felt pretty good going an entire week on those paintings.

Cheers

Also, nice comps, and the portrait is pretty good in only 4 hours. You got the skills. Keep on!

RE: ABANDONED HIDEOUT - Rshin - 05-27-2015

Ok I've decided to post here for the first time. I've been lurking in the Abandoned Hideout for a while, and I've only been part of the skype group so far. Been posting my sketchbook, and only now did I realize that if I want critiques, I should really post here haha

Here are my recent works

I actually don't know how to move forward with this one. I don't know how the lighting will work inside a cloud or foggy place, couldnt find any references. I'm thinking of changing the composition completely too.

Latest WIP of what I'm doing right now. I just had to draw it while it's still in my head. I'll work on this tomorrow when I get home. Hopefully the image is still clear in my head.

C&C are welcome of course. like what elements could I add to improve this?
also what advice can you give when working on a limited palette? thanks in advance :D

glad to finally be posting here

RE: ABANDONED HIDEOUT - Jeso - 05-27-2015

Hi Rshin, So about the dude flying. You talk about lighting, well first think what time of the day is it? Sunset? noon? figure out the position of the sun first, and then any other local lighting if there is any. Even if you are inside a cloud or smoke or whatever there will be some directional lighting and shadows, light can travel through clouds or other gases, but its just less notable, very diffused. depends on the density of the cloud too.

In this video there is some fools skydiving thru clouds, maybe it helps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaFP8x2JArU

Do work on the composition too. Maybe something more like this? Or you could zoom in even closer and focus on the character, get some smart cropping going n stuff.

RE: ABANDONED HIDEOUT - Amit Dutta - 05-27-2015

Hey RShin I like how you have started with values only. When it comes to composition it helps to simplify to the utmost level. This first image is a 3 value comp. Each value on different layers, makes it easy to carve shapes up and see the effects quickly. Being flexible here and really fixing all your comp issues will save you a hell of a lot of work later. In terms of compostion, diagonals are very powerful and dynamic, and with a square canvas these become even more useful.

This next image I took the 3 comp layers, layer locked and added a bit of line drawing detail, value gradations and smudged some edges to suggest light and form. You could easily take something like this to finish by just adding more and more details once your fundamentals have been put in place. In terms of the figure, I would say more practice on drawing figures in perspective and thinking of them as primitive objects in perspective might help you with issues of foreshortening and proportion and of course just anatomy figure study in general.

In terms of using reference, rather than trying to find the perfect reference try and just do a few studies of the type of thing you are after on their own, from photos or whatever, then apply what you learned to the specifics of your piece. Finding the perfect reference off the internet can be quite hard and this way you learn much more.
