I think i wouldn't be wrong in saying you use a heavy grain paper.I think what you have to be aware is how you use your hand angle the more you angle down the pencil the more lead you put on the paper but if you use the paper at a 90 degre angle you get clean line.Of course clean line can only be obtain in traditional medium via smart sharping of the pencil.If you vary the angle you can also create soft or clean edge if you aware of those concept.It good to have a unsharpen pencil for sketching but when you finish up you want to have control over the quality of the line you put on the page this mean often sharping and controlling the angle and position you hold the tool.

@darktiste Yes, the tooth on my current sketchbook's paper is more pronounced than I would like. I'm trying to fill this sketchbook as fast as possible (don't want to waste it) to move on to a better one.
I've been trying to get over my fear of digital painting and have started Noah Bradley's Art Camp 1.
Here's the first 5 composition master studies (using only 3 values) for Art Camp week 1. I know the point is to study the composition and shape language and not get into rendering, but I worry that my studies might still be too simplified (?).
Study of Armistice from Westworld (WIP)
I thought the clothing would be the hardest, but I actually liked rendering the wrinkles the most.

Hey with the 3 value comps, I think with some of them you got it right (number 4 looks right) but with some you succumb to the natural temptation to make it more complicated than it is. :) You don't wanna waste your value or make small shapes to try and define insignificant elements or try to prevent things from merging together. Let them!
I drew over the picture with what I see the composition to be.
Personally I think of the 3 value notan as a non-literal study. I think there are multiple good solutions, but there are also bad solutions. But at the end of the day it's about read, and not the literal value of things in the painting.
I don't know what exactly Noah Bradley's views on it are, but I just wanted to make a post because I think it's a really important and neglected topic that I've been thinking about as well.

More composition thumbnail studies. I tried to squint a lot more and just let the shapes merge.
I also recently remembered that Ugly Americans is a show that exists, so I decided to paint Callie. I haven't worked with color much at all and the pink skin will be a challenge, but it's pretty fun. (WIP)

pay attention to the edges of how you indicate with pencil like, i can barely think of a situation like in the last one on the calve where you'de use a black line to indicate an edge. Like that'd be a super hard edge. Id reccomend to learning the major landmarks of where each muscle ends so you can indicate it even when you cant see it on a skinny model which im assuming you have. Also watch prokos vid on how to sharpen a pencil, could give you some insight ;)

Wow you 3 value studies are so so much better! Sorry this is coming really late, but I commented on the earlier ones. You still like to preserve certain details (like stairs ;) ) but they read much more beautifully.
Your figure drawings are looking good! Nice shadow shapes!
