RE: Fedodika the Koala - JonHop - 10-24-2014

Nice job on the still life studies and the faces etc for your chows, and you have a unique style of colour choice for your work which I think will evolve nicely as you continue. One thing I'm noticing is that on a lot of your paintings there is a lack of sharp edges, which could be achieved by using the lasso tool or creating a silhouette of the object once its drawn and erasing the bits not in it and then locking the pixels. I also think if possible you could spend more time on your underlying drawing and making sure it's the best it can be before painting as I get the impression the drawing phase is being rushed some what so you can get to painting, but the drawing is the most important part of any painting because it's the structure that holds up the painting.

Keep busting out those anatomy studies also especially gestures they'll help a ton creating figures from imagination.

Loving the hard work going on man, keep it up! Looking forward to seeing how you progress from here ;)

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-25-2014

@Jon: very on point with everything. i was thinking about that last night actually, i said dang i gotta do some stuff with just air brush and blender maybe to focus less on funky texture brushes (which i only recently found out how to make.) Yes edges have been an issue of mine since day one though i feel i come closer to home
with more finished pieces. gonna do a few studies just focusing on using harder edges. thanks for the awesome comment!

Oh and if anyone is strugglin to get views on Deviantart, first of all, find everyone on daggers and watch em, we'll follow you back, we're a community gotta stick together! Of course it helps if you've been on here a while and people know who you are >.>. And hand out Llama badges, I don't know why but people really like those. :)

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Lyraina - 10-26-2014

Wooo, high update frequency in here! *_*

Juicy brush strokes: I think you might be going a bit too fast at times - even if those amazingly painterly artworks from some professionals look like they're done super-quick and effortless, that's more a matter of deliberately laying down nice strokes...after years of practice. I think. So you might profit from estabilishing planes, values and forms first, and then focusing on making it look nicely painted with painting on top with those juicy strokes.

As for the environments - agree with JonHop, you have a crazy but pleasing way to handle colors! Your values are all over the place though, and unless you want them to be super-impressionistic or abstract, I'd suggest you focus on those first. Work just in black and white for a while, starting out with 3-5 value steps only. Really try to simplify and understand how they work, how atmospheric perspective affects a landscape etc. Ideally from old (or new) masters and not photographs, or at least make sure to use good photographs. Masters to check out could be Bierstadt, Caspar David Friedrich, George Innes and Thomas Moran. Once you get your values under control, you can go on with color studies :)

Have a look:

Keep pushing! You're on the right track!

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-26-2014

Lyraina: Yay comment! hmm yes juicy strokes; i tried my last two things to be moreconservative with the brushwork. You have a good point about them laying down the strokes carefully. My approach until the more recent ones was quite violent haha. I was painting with my whole arm at times, like pollock for the underpaintings.

I feel now i have to just give in to those things and like you said, learn how to make the nice strokes by establishing planes and stuff. I will take your advice and do the grayscale thing i'm pretty new to environments and they're gonna be pretty daft for a while.

Thank you for your critiques and compliment on my color work! I love those guys too, gotta big folder of master landscape stuff to study, i don't like photo studies much in general anyways... :) my head feels really weird today, i need to sleep or something

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Lyraina - 10-26-2014

Don't neglect your sleep for the sake of studies unless you totally must - it'll make understanding and memorizing things easier with a clear head. Braindead zombi studies just for the sake of getting some more stuff done most of the time are more hurtful than useful in the long run. I don't know about your schedule or life so take that with a grain of salt obviously :)

Good start on the BW studies!! I'd suggest you simplify them even more in the beginning. I know it's hard! It's just so tempting to jump right into rendering and making things look nice. You'll profit from slowing down a bit more and analyzing though, breaking things down in foreground/midground/background etc, and really looking how dark your reference is in which area (and think about 'why' that is). I remember wailing when people told me to do that when I got started on enviros, so feel free to hate me for pestering you about it :p But believe me when I say you'll profit from it!

Oooh is that a ChoW sketch? Nice!! :D

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Mike - 10-27-2014

You've already got great advices. There is something really interesting in those crazy brush strokes in your environments. I wonder how it would look on the canvas with a real paint :D Good to see some still life and pose studies. If you want to draw/paint characters you've got to focus more on fundamentals. Just pick some Loomis e-book or whoever you like and practice as much as you can. Also, I know it's not a rule and every person have his/her own approach to do this but I see mostly soft brush or smudge tool which sometimes make the image look plastic and not believable. Maybe try experimenting with hard round brush or mixing those two and see if you like it :) But that's just me saying :P There is no right or wrong here.

Keep drawing man :)

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-27-2014

@lyraina: thanks! gotta simplify more definately hehe, aww why would i say something like that if you're trying to help me?? :) uuuh, yea zombie studying sucks i really was into that my first couple months of practicing!

@Mike: Thank you! Plastic looking? haha haven't got that one before, that's actually the opposite of what i usually get like people more point out it's too messy. i need to find a balance i guess :). I'm one or the other extreme lol. Need more practice!!! You have some cool stuff btw!

here's a sketch of a funky dude and the usual stuff; Gotta focus morre!

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-28-2014

here's some stuff; decided to just go overboard with the composition on the chow. Atrenr had some excellent points, and he was very spot on about how i drew the last one. If anyone has any suggestions before i render this nightmare i'd really appreciate it! umm i like this sketch it's less stiff has a lot (cough) more going on! i drew chtulus head but i erased it since would bring in his design and it's one character only. for now it's just tentacles damn type type type

(forgot to add the oil painting i did for my moms bday the hand looks huge lol)

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Lyraina - 10-28-2014

Tentacles! :D If you stick with those, why not make them a bit more sweeping and curvy to give the image more flow? Right now the left ones are curved, while the middle ones/right ones are more straight, or bent in some places but not in others. Look at some kraken, tentacles are an awesome opportunity to introduce some nice S and C curves for a dynamic composition, leading the viewer right towards your character! :)

RE: Fedodika the Koala - pnate - 10-28-2014

Hey there Mr. Koala. Nice job on the CHOW btw, loved your interpretation of the topic. Seconding what Lyra says about simplifying your focus in your studies. It's sort of like what Anthony Jones says, which is to break it down to the very essence of the specific thing you want from your study. Anyways, keep pushing it mannnnn, your study ethic is great as always. (And get dat sleep!)

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-29-2014

Lyraina: thaaaanks i'm gonna try to take my time on this one and just slowly build up the composition since it's so busy. I LOVE tentacles, and i tried to make some of the center ones a little curvier

Pnate: I'M TRYYYIIINIGGGG!!!! hehehe yea i feel these thumbnails are slowly getting better, like kinda starting to resemble something at least lol. Thanks, i'm really proud of that last chow even though it ain't perfect and stuff. A lot of portfolio stuff i wanna do will kinda look like that picture in particular, so i feel its a good start for me :) KOALA'S DON'T SLEEP!!! Uuuuh actually the truth of that is quite the opposite...

Here's the first pass on this thing gonna take it real slow and not do everything the night before. just in like 2/3 hr bursts. hehe seeing this will hopefully show how my somewhat structured process leads to such chaotic results lol

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-30-2014

soo more work on chow and i started studying some designs of my favorite old games and trading cards; Hope to work these in over time
