Hey Guys, I've been having trouble finding reference material for faces and issues constructing faces that.. well to be blunt... look good. Any tips or suggestions on your preferred way to go about faces?

You could check the resources sub forum, i believe someone posted a great source for faces.
My own method is fairly simple, i grab a model for the facial features and then i grab another one for the expression. And then i apply that expression to the first model.
It was tough (and still is sometimes) but i think it offers fairly good results.
