Interesting how I'm seeing the progress develop here. I'm really enjoying your storyboards and key frames - I've worked on those before and they definitely aren't easy, it takes a lot of development in spacial understanding and action to produce good results. Keep up the great work! I love the idea of setting an hourly goal.

OtherMuzz - Hey man, really appreciate the feedback. I probably should have gone back and changed the comp, you're right, I just couldn't bring myself to start again. Finished the piece now though, so I'll try and apply what you said for next time. Still, I tried to push the depth like you said :). Cheers.

Einver - Thanks a lot. Yeah, I think you're right. I'm going to take a few days and focus on some problem areas before starting another illustration. Definitely going to be looking at the things you've mentioned, values especially!! Thanks a ton, really helpful feedback :).

YOLOLEX - Cheers man :)

Goht - Not totally sure what you mean by storyboards/key frames. Cheers for dropping by though :).

Just finished this piece. Going to take a few days, address some issues, and do a few faster pieces before starting on the next big illustration. Should be fun :)

I always come back to your sketchbook to get inspiration and motivation, because you somehow always manage to get me back to work-when I see how much you spend your time and how much you improve.
Keep up with this, last illustrations are looking quite well :)

RE: Jake Bullock - 10000 Hour Rule - 2168/10,000 - MrFrenik - 06-28-2013

It turned out great, man, especially after you took the crits and pushed it further. The lighting turned out really well, it reads great from a distance, and the story is interesting, which is awesome. Just keep on going and pushing yourself with studies and creative work.

RE: Jake Bullock - 10000 Hour Rule - 2190/10,000 - JakeB - 06-29-2013

OtherMuzz - Thank you. I'll try and get it down from the start next time. Glad you think it paid off though :)

matt radway - Haha, do it man ;). Thank you :).

Lex_Paul - Haha, yup, it's a long way off yet. Fingers crossed I can keep posting until I get there. :). Cheers.

Toxicpanda - Ah, thank you, glad I can be of some help lol. I'll try, thanks :)

MrFrenik - Cheers dude. Yeah I wasn't sure about it. I think I'd been staring at it for too long. Glad you think it came out alright though. Just gotta make the next one better now!!

Cool stuff. One thing that might be an interesting challenge is to use fully opaque brushes to paint these master studies, both full and thumbnails; it'll help your edge control, value and color choices quite a bit.

RE: Jake Bullock - 10000 Hour Rule - 2200/10,000 - Ursula Dorada - 07-01-2013

Ooh nice updates man. And two thumbs for that serov master study, great one.

RE: Jake Bullock - 10000 Hour Rule - 2209/10,000 - JakeB - 07-02-2013

Mr Frenik - Ah yeah, I've painted like that in the past, stopped for some reason though. It'd be fun to revisit, really makes you think about each stroke right?

Ursula - Thanks, it was so fun! :D

Playing around with Zbrush, gonna start doing form studies with this I think. Fun :D

RE: Jake Bullock - 10000 Hour Rule - 2218/10,000 - Yarrnick - 07-03-2013

hey man, first reply to your sketchbook, it's blowing me away :) great job!

you asked for feedback so here is my take;

I'd put the brachioradialis higher, it you would devide the biceps in 2 parts the brachioradialis starts on the 2nd part. basicly half way on the femur bone, and it looks now as if it starts on the bottom of your arm.
Also I think you put the pronator teres on the wrong side(outside instead of inside)?

I don't really have alot of comments on your illustration beside his legs seem very short or lacks somewhat of an underbody.
I really like his face, a proper gentleman. holding his cup very stylishly.

keep on grinding :>

RE: Jake Bullock - 10000 Hour Rule - 2218/10,000 - OtherMuzz - 07-03-2013

Hey man cool to see you getting into zbrush.

First of all loose that red wax mat cap, it doesn't let you see the form properly. (makes even good models look terrible). I'd recommend just the straight grey matcap.

Then i'd recommend you work at the lowest subdivision possible at any time, so that you are focusing on the largest forms.

How are you generating your base mesh? Dynamesh?

RE: Jake Bullock - 10000 Hour Rule - 2218/10,000 - Lex_paul - 07-03-2013

Zbrush its great for anatomy:D love that master study you did 2-3 posts upper. Keep them pushing;)

RE: Jake Bullock - 10000 Hour Rule - 2218/10,000 - MrFrenik - 07-03-2013

cool studies, man; I think sculpting is a great way to get an even better handle on form, something I'd definitely like to attempt to do eventually.

The illustration's coming along nicely. I would just suggest adding more interesting lighting to the piece. It seems rather diffused at the moment, so it might be nice to add candlelight or light from the fireplace for interest. Keep up the solid work!
