Loader: thanks my dude; ya ill have some snappier proportions tomorrow, those studies were 5 minutes flat and ya quality is gonna slip, I did some even quicker ones today some for 30 seconds lol! 

So i got this Mini Perspective head bust thing, its pretty nice, tried to sketch it but i know its skewed.. Also got a Charles Dana Gibson book and its really nice, the hair, compositions and faces are fantastic to study from and tomorrow im gonna get into more 5 minute sketches and then hopefully move into the 10 minute ones soon

oh boy lol, soooo my eye is so sensitive now its cray; loved drawing this little head on my desk today, need to get in the habit of it since there's infinite things to learn from observing it at diff angles. annd a little quote from Steve Huston

"You can copy a master study or reference one time and feel good, but that's like going on just one date."

not happy with some of the proportions and shapes im designing on the IMG 1577, the other ones my eye isnt too hung up on. I suppose for the profile i could design the hair better and more cautiously but its already better than what i was doing a week ago

Good stuff, I like Sycra's take that just doing a study once is like going to the gym, picking up a weight once and going "ok yeah I know how to do this" showering and going back home.

Gliger; Preciate my dude ;)

So took on a challenge from Mr Amit today, and tried to invent a head that was higher quality than my other imagination heads. I combined a few references to make like a friendly cute southern girl i had imagined named Mikey. I think I actually got a good likeness to how she looked surprisingly in my head. Also did it on paper, and realized i cant indicate curly hair that well. Also i think the likeness is pretty different on the paper, she looks more mature and motherly on the paper, and more teen and innocent in the digital

This was fun tho, i should probably try a male next time since i havent practiced many shadow pattern stuff from watts, just dudes. It's cool i can do that kinda thing tho, like using different references to come up with a face that's unique. I tink working 100% from imagination is silly when you could use inspiration for invention. But you know if you gott a great visual library and can show off like Mr. Gi, go for it; but even he could benefit from inspiration nearby lol

There you go. One iteration of applying study and you've already got a specific topic to focus a future study on: Curly hair. If it was me I'd do some studies of that while the problem is fresh in your mind...then use what you learn and immediately apply to another applied portrait. Always take time to evaluate your 'applied' work and workflow to identify the next areas of improvement that study should be focused on.

The last head is much better but still hitting uncanny valley with that slightly goofy expression thing you do in your female imaginative stuff. The digi one is heaps better in that arena. So there's another thing. You could definitely work on studying varying expressions amd applying something different to the next application. All this from one applied study and that's with a cursory evaluation. Ofc you should prioritise the bigger issues first but at least you are bringing some actual problems to address rather than grinding study faces until you hope you can do it without reference by magic one day. Never grind studies without a regular feedback loop built in. A lot of that hard work will disappear down the toilet otherwise.

Like, I always was disappointed that when i would draw the "goofy" expression as you put it, it would always look like cringey or weird or awkward. I want it to look sincere and attractive, like the moment a girl realizes she's into you. So im gonna focus on getting stuff like that worked out because that is a gap i've always wanted to close, since that expression, done the right way, is possibly my favorite. But i really appreciate the input and I hope to get around to fixing it even more, i tried some stuff today and if i get the time i'll try to apply it tomorrow or saturday. 

Might be busy tomorrow but i'll try to at least get a bust in. This angle was tough and ya its flawed but it turned out better than i thought it would. very interesting drawing from these extreme angles, really puts my skills to the test :)

K so, did some john Grello studies today and tried to apply it in as similar style from memory; Also a study of Sargents Henry James Portrait. Stuff i learned:


1. You can really shave the eyebrows down to make a more interesting design and its important to not forget that they follow the form of the skull underneath.
2. cheekbones in a 3/4 profile can be quite vertically shaped in alignment with the jaw.
3. Sargent draws men with really attractive features, almost like he puts makeup on their eyes and makes their lips fuller. Like his depictions of his clients are just a very very flattering idealization of them.
4. Grello simplifies eyes like and highlights the roundness of the eyelid on the bottom and top. 
5. putting a grey tone down can help a lot for sketches and finding attractive shapes with a lighter tone. 
6. Light line weight on lips and teeth is attractive.
7. you may place a feature in the right spot, but it takes some effort to get it to a point of likeness or attractiveness. 
8. The henry portrait has a very subtle tilt that gives it a powerful look, and from memory i drew it without that, hence missing some important structure in the skull/

These are fun, watch a watts, do it with ref, then from memory; lots of challenges and obstacles to face along the way and definitely seeing where the holes are right away. got like 4 more male watts vids, then I'll start the female ones, which i'll definitely be using more as i get closer to making any future personal work, as i plan to draw loots of sexy ladies, but classy and mysterious.

Peter: thanks my man, i'll probably go for doing 2 vids tomorrow since i was fuckin around with ballpoint pen all day. It's an interesting medium, love doing delicate lay ins and since im more aware of line weight now, i can get more out of it!

alright lol, i need to carve out a friggin schedule and cross it off as i go because i waste way too much time on just silly things. I only got this one picture done today, and its not great lol. Eye placement is too robotic, somethings just wrong can't put it into words but its bad mmkay

gonna have a long day tomorrow, but it'll be fun though, moneys cool :O

I could probably get through and apply 3 studies from watts a day if i were to focus, and that would fit into my goal of going through the whole head program twice before the end of June, I think i can do it if I really focus and that's just what i want more of is to stop wasting time and get this shit in my head

K so forum was down for a few days for me, but thanks to Dennis for the quick email replies and help!

Still copying John Grello alot and its really helping me get my faces to look more natural and appealing, got one more male watts video to do then be moving into the female portraits.

whew man this curly hair is such a bitch.. im trying to invent one, but im using a few different references instead of copyin directly. I spent like 3 hrs on this and it still looks barely laid in lol; Im going for a tighter looks first so i know what to omit when i go back into loose. 

Im really looking forward to the watts female portrait stuff because i am having the toughest time wrapping my head around lighting a female head. The fact that the more planes you show, the less attractive a woman looks is definitely keeping me from making more bold choices and i need to see it done well first hand. SPecially with charcoal, where you cant just air brush and make baby soft edges. 

Also a 3 hr sketch with some Yizheng ke inspired texture stuff, not my best work, but its hell of beyond what i was doing a few months ago

I think you reach a level up on that last digital portrait.I am really impress that you can produce so many study of that quality and you don't seem to get tired of drawing the same thing over and over just to get a little bit even more accurate.On the list of thing you could work on rendering of hair and skin texture would be fun to see.You should also work on some color study.Keep that consistency and you up for sucess.

Darkiste: thanks so much dude! im gonna try to avoid color this year, i tend to waste too much time fooling with it because it is the one area i feel im skilled at, and i need to focus more on structure and edges. This year is like an enema for my bad art habits, and getting consumed in color is definitely one of them! Same with skin texture, just waste way too much time on it, im trying to do more with less. Right now i wanna work on being able to draw at least decently convincing heads from imagination that could be rendered to a decent level, kind of like John Grello

And as for repetition, if you draw enough terrible heads, you start to crave the idea that one day you could draw a nice one ;) and that feeling never gets old!


So i spent a lot of time in town today, which will also be the case for the next two days, but i will have life drawing stuff tomorrow, so i'll at least post that.. In the meantime have this 2 hr chloe sevigney sketch

whew, watched a lot of watts today, i was peeking into the figure course, and it looks promising :). Was raining all day so i didnt get the chance to run or workout so if miss that i end up feeling terribly lazy lol, anyways got some more rendering on my chloe sevigny thing, maybe 1 hr.

I feel weird like, when i render, i want to carry my calligraphy from what im learning from watts but i end up just using the tools im used to, albeit more efficiently. I guess in digital its more effort to try and replicate the markings of traditional when its so convenient to use the big and highly intelligent brushes to get everything down. That and i probably havent developed enough a taste for the charcoal style to "think" in that mindset of mark making. 

Life drawing this friday was also frustrating, I didn't get one drawing i was satisfied with, and couldnt pull a good line for the life of me. The really beautiful model took this pose, high above us with this cool back light getting behind her hair, it was so powerful and i totally could not stop my brain from putting that deep perspective in the lousy 3/4s standard pose. I needed for that one at least to think of the basic cylinder turning in space, seeing below it, and everything that follows from that. 

ahh well, i got a big plan for a long master study from watts tomorrow, its one of those gorgeous russian atelier drawings, super fun to draw from. Then maybe some grello and applying that to some simple invention, we'll see ;)

Would still be fun to see you decompress on some personal stuff to balance the study.Sometime we forget that learning is throught experimenting it not only copying it also adjusting and understanding were we need to pay more attention to certain fundamental.We should to save time also learn to visualize and try to rely less on reference.You can learn to draw just by drawing.It throught observation and correction that you achieve great result.No artist can follow the same path and achieve the same result every road as something to teach us if we are ready to look at were we took the wrong turn.

Don't let the fun leave the building.

I say all that but i think you allready have a goal i just think there many way to reach it don't limit yourself that my point.

I hope i said something of use if not sorry.
