I think you might have the same face syndrome specially for the women.I think you have really a preference for the type nose you do and it limit your design but that a choose i just wanna make you aware if that an issue you wanna fix or not.

Darkiste: given i was drawing the same character from different angles, ill take that as a compliment!

Starting to push those things that little bit of distance to match moreno's tasty lines. Still failing hard on these, its a lot of fun and im happy with how hard i went this month

Darkiste: my last client job really cemented the idea that people are looking for very dynamic poses that aint your average life drawing pose.

>pic related

Id be learning valuable lessons if they were any pose, strippers, soldiers, salad makers, its all fundamentals. Masters of anatomy is a huge book with hundreds of great poses in a very fun style that i deeply resonate with, im halfway through it, if i bust ass i might be able to finish it before the end of march

So coming up this weekend is a huge convention that is local to me, and there will be hundreds of high school kids who will probably have daddies credit card close at hand, so i will be prepping for that this week doing lots of timed five minute head lay ins/quicksketch.

I tried it out this saturday and the tip margin was very very high on these, so theres no telling what i could get starting thurs-saturday. I got my client work outta the way, so i can get back to going crazy! Also a fun clothed life drawing class will be something ill be attending tomorrow, so expect lots of posts then. Quicksketch for tips is so fun, its like getting paid to practice and i love the pressure and that sinking relief when you get a decent head going and it all looks decent. Get a cooking timer for sure, really a game changer

hardcore 5 minute quicksketch today, some i like alot, some have their obvious flaws. good reference makes all the difference with these, and the first life drawing class at the bo bartlett center, model was a black, clothed model. i struggled at first but my camera helped see better. Its just tough to see a lot of key details from far away. This drawing i felt was good when i made it, but i feel like i need to study some other works so i can learn to wrap the hatching to the form better, that and learn to make the eye sit in the socket better. like i know its there, but it feels like its plugged in, i want to draw it to where it looks like it belongs, and sometimes i achieve that

Lots of work, that's good.

Right now your choices of line quality seem kind of random? Try to look at how animation artists show different material qualities with different types of lines (straight, curved, smooth, scratchy...), for example: Milt Kahl, Yutaka Nakamura, Mariel Cartwright, Carter Goodrich... it's a style thing so this is more about the final product than about studying the figure, therefore if you are just focusing on studying the figure then what you are doing is probably fine, but getting better at designing your linework can help tell so much about the material you are drawing (fur, fat, bone, muscle...)

Reply
Gliger: thats  a good observation, ya i was trying to do some figure studies with that and the memory studies. The reason the line weight isnt on point is simply because im using ballpoint and making mistakes, trying to gear my lines/proportions into accuracy.

I did however spend more time and attention today on line weight as there were a lot of things i was neglecting, like completing contours, thickening lines etc. im working from raul moreno's masters of anatomy book, im 150/300 pages through, i have this goal to complete it hopefully this year, at least copying each finished drawing once. its been really fun and has helped expand my pose visual library. His lines are pretty straight forward and not abstract, im trying to get a good style to base my drawings off, the invented ones at least. I do understand line weight, and can get even carried away with it in portraits/quick sketch stuff, but not really with this ballpoint study stuff, which is more about anatomy

I tried my best to line stuff up right, pay more attention to mouth, and eyes, stuff i often bomb. lotta adding my own twist on things, color, features, it felt kinda like an invention at some points, i really this effort, i wanna use it as a header on like artstation

I think your last studies of the woman came out very well. Did you learn a lot from this? Usually, the best information from a study is internalized around the 90% (to make up a number) part. After that, it can devolve into copying mindlessly, which is a problem I find myself facing. You put some imagination into these, though, telling by the lighting around her head, and it ends up looking good- but I would encourage you to speed up your studies.

You might find that you learn the same amount in 1 hour, getting down just the bare minimum of an image, with a sprinkle of detail. Then you have seven hours to devote to other things, either studies or pieces. Studies are meant to give you the information to carry into your personal/professional work, and an original piece you create with beautiful lighting and hours of time you put into it will be a bigger success and a bigger learning experience than an eight hour study.

I hope this helps, even if you think I'm completely wrong. Thumbs_up

1. Use the biggest brush possible for a given passage.
2. Paint large shapes first, followed by small shapes.
3. Save your tonal and chromatic accents until the last.
4. Try to soften any edge that doesn’t need to be sharp.
5. Take time to get the center of interest right.

Or, the briefer version: (B.L.A.S.T.)
Big brushes.
Large to small.
Accents last.
Soften edges.
Take your time.

Hello! Well done on your study, Fed. Just a couple of quick pointers:
- The value of her top feels way too intense for the lighting scenario and overall image. The shading is also pretty messy and blurry (closer to the neck) compared to everything else
- Her lips feel like they are protruding off of her face. This is mainly because the shadows on the philtrum has been pushed too far forwards.
- I know the face holds more pink tones than the body, but the neck and face are too different in colour.

Hope that helps some. Just things to keep in mind for the next study :)

Bea: ya i agree very much with that approach! im only doing this 8 hr effort because i havent done a long effort in a while, but i really appreciate your post :D

chubby, ya ive been overhauling the smaller things on this pic, and i like what you pointed out, so i tried to hit those things, thanks btw <3

Had a cruddy day, kinda sick, spilled half my dinner, whacked my head on the door, my dog might die from constipation, my intuous pen broke and itll be friday before i can draw digital again. 50$ lotta money for a piece of plastic. This painting was a blast though, love chloe sevigney to bits. gonna go for a lot of memory drawings tomorrow, since i am out of commission computer wise

Yikes sorry to hear, I'm no stranger to life hitting hard (I'm currently stuck at my grandmother's house while my bathroom is being remodeled so no digital art for me as well hahaha) Best thing to do is roll with the punches, show life you can take it.

Great positive attitude and the painting is coming along well... although from what im seeing on this laptop her right eye seems a bit out off balance, plenty of people have uneven eyes so its a minor nitpick more than anything. Keep on keepin' on!

milkin: ey thanks bruv, ya ive been recovering the past day probably slept about 20 hrs with a fever. Im almost out of it, and my dogs feelin better, my new pen works and im on to the next thing. I fixed her eye, as you had a good point, and I like the piece, but i feel like i need to challenge myself in a new way.

I wanna move into narrative illustration, since ive been squirreling around in this drafstman kinda stuff for a while now. I wanna tell stories, but i just struggle settling on a story to tell. I tried drawing some stick men, like trying to think of an activity, so im gonna do that a lot more, and try to figure out what it is i want to draw. I am leaning towards the idea of sexy goth girls, as ive always wanted to, but i dont want it to be too porny, or too pinnupey, or too narrative driven, kind of a middle ground of those things, its tough :/

I was still sick today, so i was only able to scribble this scene of sexual harrassment out. It gave me some ideas, like i live in the redneck south, and anything cool just gets ruined by southern culture. I think ill just do more stick men, maybe shoot for 500 or something tomorrow to force myself to just visualize and just think about narrative. ive read so much about composition and stuff already, i get the theory very well i just cant visualize for shit, so thats gonna take some searching

hey Fedodika never posted in your sketchbook before so just a shout out to say hi... since your a serial crimson daggers poster which is a good thing lol

not really much to say.... I can see you doing a lot of work and putting the time in and thats whats going to get you to your goal fastest

probably if there was one critique I would have is the gesture in your head and neck area connecting to the body I think focusing on those areas for a few days... maybe head/neck mucsle anatomy, twists and turns? anyway.... great stuff

Here my paint over.I don't know what to say to be honest i hope you can use an idea or two from the paint over.I think the creepy vibe was almost there but i close the gab between them to push it even further.
