Fedodika the Koala
You remind me of this show from when i was little...

On your dream knight, the black of the hands takes away from the focal point unnecessarily. I would put the same reflective surface you have on the rest of him on his gauntlets. I think in general you could focus more on using value contrasts within a composition to establish a stronger focal point. Im still trying to wrap my head around value to be honest. I would recommend you practice breaking comps down into 4 or less values. I see a tendency for you to have a very bright general value in pretty much all your comps. Hope this helps.

hmm well, i'm gonna quit workin on this image because there are just too many things i shoulda fixed early on..
Maybe it'll help someone if i list all the discrepancies i have with it!

1. 75% of the image is dark values and there are just too many warm colors. The cool colors in the rocks kind
of helps, but not enough to contrast the rest of the image well.
2. i painted the hair too much, and got lost in the detail, disregarding the flowiness i had in mind earlier.
3. the face is pretty, but the way the hair attaches to the head makes the skull look squashed or flat around
the bangs. Also it would have been best to really simplify the hair since at this distance detail doesn't matter.
4. I wanted to sword to kind of be slimy like an octopus, but i wasn't sure how to go about getting that texture,Or maybe I did, but i initially made it a very rocky texture which is too similar to the background.
5.Initially i wanted a glare or something across the image from strong sunlight to avoid the sudden saturated to bright value transition'
6. I didn't design the hand right, i had it randomly pointing off screen because i thought it'd be a more
eloquent pose, but this character isn't quite eloquent enough for that.
7. While i think the arrangement of the rocks is interesting, it seems random and amateurish.
8.I wanted the sun to hit the sword with a hint of red to portray translucence, but due to me painting it
such a rough texture, it doesn't work very well.
9. the image is too much about the background, but it's tough to show a full design without a background, well
in an illustration sense.
10. While the pose is more dynamic than most my previous works, I wanted to evoke a sense of falling, and maybe have less in the background, more of a weightlessness.
11. The more i think i can paint metal, the less i can actually do it.

Oh well, my mom said she liked it lol.

Yea, that's it! next time i'll do this image where it's about half dark and half bright, maybe have the figure
falling over a daytime desert scene, which is a lot brighter. Till then i'm really gonna take what i learned
from Dan Dos Santos on One fantastic week and block out the values first. Compositions tuff.. highly recommend that talk btw, made me see alot of things differently in a very short amount of time

The sketch i put here of the skater girl is a bit more sophisticated and more in line with what i learned from the previous image; plus she's a cutie.

Hey man getting heaps better! Solid effort on that last piece. Main problems doe me would be compositional, there are so many crazy hard, repeated angles in the figure + mountains that its stiffening up the whole picture too much. The left leg and right arm, with the torso and right leg make an "X" shape right in the center of the image.. Plus having the brightest light right behind her waist draws your eye to the X even more. Not sure if this is what you were going for, but I'd try to break up those angles with some nice flowing curves. And Id throw a little atmospheric perspective into the mountains to push your value range and make the figure pop more. It is great to see how far you've come :) last figures looking super solid too

corey: wow thanks for the crit man! that last piece really made me realize i'm not the best at setting up compositions and i'm only now starting to notice shapes and stuff in paintings. So today i started doing studies without lines initially and just started looking at shapes and values. I also am enjoying applying my anatomy studies to like a girl sketch and try to arrange simple values. And i really appreciate the kind words, they really warmed my heart and were very encouraging today!

So today i tried just painting without lines and tried to use less brushstrokes, kinda like Mike Azevedo. This painting style is so fun i worry if i do it too much i won't get any better haha. I learned a few tricks though, and i'll share one with you, it is in the first study. To make like a base for colorful rocks or a texture, do an underpainting of two complimentary colors, i used a red and navy color. Then take the lasso tool and kind of scratch it over it, as this makes little scratches/pebbles of selections, but hold shift while you do it! Then use like color adjustment or correct colors and play around with the hues and values and you'll easily get this effect of rainbow rocks hehe; i only rendered like 2 of em, but it's a cool trick!

Wow, i truly love your colour man. Impressive pallete schemes. Your skills are quite impressive.
I would just recommend you to set aside a few days/weeks and focus on nailing some fundamentals; anatomy, structure of the face etc.
Cheers! :)

Good to see you're experimenting more with techniques, Mr. Koala! Painting with less strokes is good practice and I'd say your attempts at doing that came out rather well. One thing I maybe would say is limit the directions you take your strokes; in some of those pieces you posted they're a little all over the place (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), but when they're around the background of the main subject (such as in the piece of the woman with the camera), it can be a little distracting. Anyway, great stuff as always, man.

My koala friend! I think something that may be helpful is to try and get the shapes of some studies down as accurately as possible! Your making gains with your form, just gotta tighten up those shapes.

hey koala bby <3 <3

I love viewing sketchbooks after a while of not looking at them, so I can really appreciate how much the artist has grown... because, well *ahem* damn mr. koala!
... so many nice colours... and girls... and bums <3

lovingcritz: so I reckon if you consider perspective a bit more when you start pieces and whatnot - more art gains on top of jones' gains method

Jones: Heeey thanks man! i'm gonna be doin some longer studies for rest of the month probbb, i did one today for a couple hours like 6-7 and learned a ton, tried to compress the application down into an hr or so and i remembered soooo much more dude, really reccomend this for anyone trying to reach that next level. the understanding and focus is key to all this improvement stuff... but muscle memory is a big part too

Smrrfeete: i'll draw some sexy boiz 4 u one day, i'm sorry for all the ladies who come by here and see all the icky girls, my heart goes out ta ya! <3 <3 <3 xxxx perspective is important yep, i'm givin it my best shot! MY LOVE 4 U IS BOUNDLES!!!
