Ass Kick
Its weird how dynamic your poses are but when it comes to a finished piece, it's just a straight line up and down for the gesture. I'd reccomend instead of doing a long illustration, trying to make a good figure posed with a good gesture and make sure all the forms read; That'll get you better much faster.

Trust me if you go through like the first 15 or so pages of my SB alot of my practices were just struggling to paint a face in 3/4's and wasting a lot of time with the transform tool and realigning proportions. It's time much better spent getting a good drawing... But that being said, i know that 3/4 portait is TUUUUUFFFF but you can learn much faster if you skip the painting phase and try to get the best line drawing you can, the planes will do the rest of the work if you understand them in line!

Whoo hooo! Been a while since I struck your SB and I love the hustlin'! :D

I enjoyed flipping through the studies you are doing. In terms of color, I am also pretty bad at it so no advice I can provide yet. The only advice I can give is toward the figure which is watch out for the structure. I also agree with Fedodika on getting the best line drawing that you can. 3/4 is super challenging a good think to do is look at angle relationships between features at least that's what kinda helps me. I look at Marko Djurdjevic's Marvel book and in it it, if I can jog my memory, says he grasped color very quickly because he understood line so well. Anyway, I love your progress so far! Keep rocking Anna!

Artherriorhexis thank you so much but im not hustlin im just sleeping and being lazy all day long >.< Yeah i am trying to get a better foundation with my lines and forms from now on. But i also wanna learn values and color waahh. So much that i suck at.
Fedo man thanks! Yeah that annoys the hell out of me. The knight looked s boring. Just a stupid basic design thing. I will focus more on that. Marko is so good i love his stuff *.* his designs give me live haha

Just some random stuff from the last days. I did a design with some variatioins. i dont know which one to pick. Then some johannes voss studies that make me feel unworthy. I also did 60 sec poses but they are boring to show (and i am too lazy to scan them) and started trying out gouache and failed big. I'll probably post some of the traditional stuff tomorrow.

Hey. Those figures look absolutely awesome. I agree with Fedodika, would love to see a painted/rendered version. Gouache, and any traditional media really, is a bit tricky when you first pick it up. Keep in mind that because the surface never cures, it will reactivate whenever it gets wet. Try to make a mark, then leave it alone; don't pick at it too much. I find it helps to lay out my paint on damp paper towel, so it doesn't dry out too quick. Remember, to lower the saturation of a colour, add the complimentary (red to green, orange to blue etc...)
Let me know how you go, really excited to see what you come up with.

Matthew thank you man <3 I will try to keep that in mind when im doing this today >.<
Fedo thank youuuu. Its actually the first time that i really thought about the design of something so you saying that makes me really happy.

So todays stuff. It looks so little even though it took me so long...that annoys the fuck out of me.

HHHEHEEY Did a little crit for ya! Make sure you define a clear light source, but more importantly understand the surface you are rendering with the knowledge of proper planes. Remember that reflected light can never be more powerful than the light it is reflecting. The middle crit is something i suggest you strive for before adding color. If you get that right, adding color takes like 5 minutes and is just effortless.

I used your same palette and just a colorize layer, so your skin tones are good, don't worry, you're picking good colors! I did a little trick i usually do however which is where i magic wand tool a random area, then hit up a color adjust and slide it towards more blue contrast, then blend it. Just a preference, but you shouldn't think of color as hard, structure and value is hard, get that right and you can do whatever the hell you want with color and it'll work

Just google image John Asaro if you don't believe me when i say color is whatever you want it to be; it's all in values, which is rooted in structure.

The best exercise is just finding the simplest planes and shapes possible in skull photos; Even tracing it. May sound silly but it super helped me!

Thanks so much you are da best <3 Yeah you are absolutely right my structure is lascking so much and dont get me started on my values >.< i am going to tackle that more from now on!

Todays stuff. I was not as productive as i wanted to but i will work on that too. Listening to Dave Rapoza helps with discipline. He is insane! My two first Gouache paintings ever. Its so embarassing but I think/hope that you can see that i learned a bit from totally and utterly failing the left one when doing the right one after that. Even though i dont like it i still learned a lot doing it. Then my first ever fully painted enviroment yay! It was acutally super fun. A selfie trying to understand the planes some sketchbook pages and two studies.

do some copies of these from different angles, that should give you a good idea

Asara heads are everything laid out, or better yet sculpt one or build it in 3d!

Keep at it with the landscapes. It may be worth your while doing a few photo studies, paying real close attention to how atmospheric perspective shifts colour. You'll probably find that your colours tend towards blue, get lighter, and less saturated. Also, master studies will help you immensely with your composition. Really pleased to see you having a go at the gouache; I know I've been pushing the idea. You may find that you don't get good coverage on the canvas boards. I'd recommend painting on paper. Watercolour paper, which tends to be around 300 gsm, should be just fine.

Keep up the good work

Just to add onto what Fedodika said about the asaro head. I'd say if you had any money to spare they are well worth the investment. I currently own the memorized head and the original head (the one Fedodika linked) and the are great since your able to attach them to a camera tripod and see how the planes look from any angle, only problem though is that depending on where you live the customs charge could be a bitch.  Meh

Fedo Thank you they are super helpful <3
Matt Thank your so much I will defenitely get more into enviros. I have the feeling that i am getting a bit more comforatble iwth just trying out color than i was before. And man gouache is hard I need to learn to be more patient.

Peterrr thanks for the tip. I looked them up and they look so good ugh. I will try to save up for one but till then the internet and my own weird face will have to be enoug haha :D

Stuff from the last two or three days i forgot to count. I was just to tired and lazy to update >.<

Wahh i hate those big updates Ill try to make it daily again.

So im noticing this mistake you're making, it may have to do with how you're treating the form of the nose. You're still kinda doing the symbol drawing thing with it; like you have to remember a nose protrudes from the face and you're kind of it in that phase where (i still go through it) where you feel like you have to show all the features, and only at extreme angles are they not visible.

When i tilt my head at that direction, i see my nose moving in space, because in your portait here, your nose is literally on the same plane as your cheeks. If you keep postin I'll keep critting you i mean it could be a cool experiment to see how fast one could improve with lots of crits haha. Let me know if you want me to stop, but i see a lot of potential in you and i wanna see where you can get with your work ethic with some of the stops pulled out

Really cool youre doing the asaro heads, it's quickly making a difference. Try doing some from memory, that'll be much more challenging, then check back and you'll see the blindspots!

Naahh never stop <3 its firing me up and reminding me how much i need to improve! Noses are so hard for me you are right with that. Facein perspective and all is super difficult for me but i will practice that!

Todays stuff. Hmm i dont know i wasted about 1.5h after i got home from work with stupid stuff i need to get that under control. Btw has anyone already seen the bobby chiu Marko djurdjevic interview? Its the best one he did in a long time. Man Marko is so inspiring he is hardcore. Go see it its just amazing *.*

Hehe symmetry, dont forget it! make sure those ears get down to the nose line, also line the eyes up in size and spacing its crucial for a front view.

Also remember, for a character the pose is key; your rendering and design on the above dude is very nice but he's basically a perfect rectangle lol. If you had a cool costume like that, why would you stand straight up and down with your hand forcefully at your side?

Hey NoodleInBox,
I like gold studies, especially the nest with the golden egg!
You did really well thinking where the soft and the hard edges are. Would be amazing to see that in your other pieces too!

Reply
Waahhh thank you Fedo<3 your critiques make me push harder! Next pose wont be that stiff and i am working on the symmetry
Gregorkari Thanks ma! I will try to incorporate it into my next painting! Need to apply these studies after all or they will be useless

Stuff...hmm i was busy the last days since i am preparing to move next week but thats no excuse. I could and should have done more! Need to be more hardcore

your selfportrait has a lot of ace stuff! Especially the hair and the white shapes that bleed into the canvas (..paper). Take a bit more time for sketching to make sure things keep symmetrically and everything will be in place when you start laying down your brushstrokes. I also really like that you keep some of your strokes rough and big and then have some little sharp lines to make small marks. That reminds me a bit of the art for metal gear solid. like knowing what you do but not overly wellbehaved.

Gregorkari thanks man for the tips although i really dont know what im doing at all haha...fuck >.<

Todays stuff. Again not as much as i need to do
