You shouldn´t be so harsh on yourself regarding the piece, it´s on the right track. I sense a crispness on the skull that reminds me of Dave Rapoza, there is volume on the skull.
I think this piece of Dave Rapoza ( Skeletor ) might be a great reference; https://www.deviantart.com/daverapoza/ar...-266241371

Cheers!!

Hey thanks for the kind words. i do feel like it has potential . Just gotta keep fakin it till I make it.
I feel like I'm getting close to as far as I can take it, I'll probably give it one real crack then move on and maybe come back when I've learned more

I think ive gone as far as im currently able to with this. I have starting thinking about a new idea.
I learned a lot from working on this and I enjoyed it even though I struggled my way through it.
listened to some Floyd while wrapping this up. I had a little time left and decided to do a figure drawing.
I have a LONG way to go with that shit. I hate doing it. I picked up the ref photos from proko.
Yoni packin some heat! lol

you did a decent job on his facial proportions, however his arms are too big and i feel his torso is not long enough, if you post the reference we can give a better analysis so you can notice and fix mistakes and grow faster

Hey thanks for the feedback, as soon as you said it I see what you mean!! I'm going to have to set up a schedule to make sure I'm forcing myself to put in at least 1 hour of study everyday while still giving me time to work on fun stuff.

You have a 4 to 2 range using only hatching in your last piece.I don't see any highlight. You should not use your background value as an highlight but as a mid value. If you draw on anything other than white you should have a 3,5 value as background and 3 value of dark grey and 3 value of light grey.Try to stay away from hatching in digital it eat alot of energy you should be saving by using big brush. It a choose you have to make if you go for hatching try to atleast show more thought behind the way you lay them down to show more form.

The example i gave are kinda sloppy but it to under how to use hatching to describe the form.

Wow you're right, after you say that I see that I'm not even trying to describe form just sloppily throwing lines down to suggest some shadows.
It's so crazy that I put that big sloppy blob of black under his leg, I dont even remember doing it lol
I want have time to draw anymore today but I have from 2am-4am everyday to draw. I'm going to start doing some warmup sketches to get into it then I think I'll try to use some bigger brushes and take my time more.

Well you have to accept that you make misstakes and correct them. A sign of a competent artist isn't that they preform stuff flawlessly but rather that they notice and correct their misstakes. Ideally you want to find a way to work that makes correcting your errors as easy and painless as possible. If you spend a lot of your time focusing on details, texture and small effects, it's going to hurt a lot when you have to correct and re-paint something big.

I can understand that there is a lot of personal pain involved when learning, especially if it's something you care about. Where I studied it wasn't uncommon to either see or hear of people having really bad breakdowns. If you're having issues with something, even simple stuff, you have to try different approaches to solving that problem. I personally don't have much faith in subconscious skill like when people talk about "grinding" to get better, they're pretty much just spinning their wheels until they accidentally stumble upon something that may help them.

Be smart, approach drawing and painting as problem solving. Articulate the problem, do research to see how others have solved it (this can be as much as looking at old paintings addressing the same issue) then formulate a new approach and test it. if it goes well, that means you probably have something of value. If it fails, figure out why and see if you can correct the approach and make it better.

dude I HATE doing this, I hate it. I just want to disembowel myself on my table saw. its basically like my mind starts screaming when I try to draw from reference I don't know how else to describe it. I know there isn't any art to post today but I just don't know what to do. I guess just give up.
Here my advise read this post i am sure you will find a few point you can work on.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I lost my motivation and decided to pursue something else that I've always wanted to do and record a song. Doing that has been alot of fun and it inspired me to start a new drawing.
Will keep trying to push him, I know in probably going about it wrong but im just having fun
(Heres the song so far for anyone interested.

It's all me I'm not in a band or anything... I just have to record a bridge and solo and learn how to tweak the plugins a bit more. )

haha your song is extremely corpsegrinder cannibal corpse influenced, i used to play death metal before i did art. I think you mixed it decently, i can tell the drums are programmed, which isnt my favorite personally, but i get a lot of modern metal goes for that out of necessity over aesthetic. you know its techinically performed well, maybe apply that sense of technical you know playing in time and being accurate to art. If you wanted to go anywhere with music id just focus on sounding different because it really sounds like a cannibal corpse song, almost like a 1 for 1 copy of some of their riffs/vocal style, etc. just without the speed, more slow, (like but not classified) doom metal.

So like your axe dude, his anatomy is weird, his pose doesnt really accomodate his character. he's clenched up like a little girl with an axe. you could swap that pose with little red riding hood with a napsack over her shoulder and itd work. make the silhouette distinct to the character, just blacked out it should feel like the executioner.

frazetta drew it like this

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/e3/59/28/e3592...0e2cd8.jpg

you know push the plant of his feet in the ground, the width of the axe held horizontally feels heavier, more intense. and if you wanna do a more one arm thing, think paul bunyon, but that would look more casual. This dude kills people, hes a cool design, kind of an eddie? from iron maiden face, but yea, youd grow a lot faster if you didnt paint and focused on anatomy rather intensely and drawing cool poses, but not spending hours painting something to try to cover the shortcomings of it

Thanks for the feedback, I can see what you mean about the pose but I still like how casual it is. I wanted it to be like "ah just another day in hell chopping people's heads off."
To be honest I didn't think too much about it, I just started drawing it and that's how it came out .
As far as music goes I have no interest in making money off of it, it's just fun for me. I like cool shit and I like to make it myself just to be closer to it.... im a fan of fighting and mma so I spent 2 years training muay thai and bjj 5 times a week, then I felt like I understood it well enough to stop but I never wanted to actually be a fighter.
It stings a little to hear you say you think I ripped off a song, definitely not but I grew up in the 80s and 90s with older cousins who listened to heavy music  so I've been immersed in that world since I was about 6. Slayer, cannibal corpse, morbid angel, death, entombed, etc..so if it sounds akin I'm not suprised. The smoke I exhale is going to smell like the smoke I breathe in.

You can listen to cannibal corpse and say "they ripped off a slayer riff just tuned down and played slower" you can pretty much do that with anyone, we're all just inhaling eachothers smoke. If you post your music I promise I'll be able to say that it sounds like this or that.
I pretty much hate bands who worry so much about being different just to be different...its like "hey man I like cheeseburgers, I'll eat them here or there.... I just love that shit....You can keep your eye ball pudding"

I dont know what I'm really doing, this is how just I'm dealing with the stress of providing for a family with no safety net. If I fuck up we're out in the street...so it's kinda late for me to make a change because all f this rests on my back.but sometimes the weight crushes me. So this is just a way for me to still be an individual and not just a dispenser of utility I guess.

oh i love those bands too (im 25 so much it makes me a minority of metal listeners in my generation who like the new stuff,) and slayer definitely on their first record ripped heavily on iron maidens first few efforts, so much that you can pinpoint the song exactly.

And yea the music ive made is derivitive of things, but some sare closer than others to being derivitive. Im not trying to bash you really, i do the same stuff for fun occasionally, playing death metal was a fantasy of mine, even if you put your all into it and got insanely good, you still might not make it because people who are fans tend to struggly financially, and dont have much money, that and many people dont like it in general. Thats why i chose art, because even though this a massive uphill battle, it wont take half as long to get somewhere financially than with metal.

But yea i think doing it is cool, im not trying to harp or discourage you, keep it up and enjoy yourself, cuz im in the same boat as far as music :)

I couldn't stop seeing him as a girly little executioner with his little axe after what you said so I started over.
I spent my sons nap fucking with waves plugins trying to get then to work in reaper so this is about 15 minutes of work for me. Felt good though, pose just popped in my head and drew itself, I've probably seen it in a conan comic or something before. But whatever
I might still finish the other one, maybe put a little flower hat on hin or something just for fun

Put a little time in, mostly just trying to figure out the anatomy. I feel like I know the anatomy pretty good but something seems slightly off, mainly think it's the tricep?

???

Couldnt it be possible, that you find an arm in a pose like that on the internet, where then you can exactly see how the triceps (and the rest) has to be?

I havent posted in a long time. took a long break from drawing. getting back into it.
I did a wei wang study that I learned alot from. it was the first time ive ever taken my time a measured proportion and it payed off. I am really happy with how accurate it came out honestly, in the past ive always just winged it until now.
I learned alot from the study and afterward I made this goblin, I wanted his jaw to be broken I thought it made him look more dangerous, i was going for a cross between a labyrinth goblin and a warcraft orc.

here is the wei wang study, didnt finish rendering because I felt I got what i needed out of the study.
and the goblin

hopfully ill get better, not really sure what the best way to go about learning this is, just copying from pictures until something clicks?
