Tuuuxic: Thanks so much! I may try to get around to that later <3
John: Man i really appreciate the advice. today I drew up a muskateer, and found some problem areas, but way less than I expected. I guess the reason I never made a portfolio for anything is built, well, on fear of rejection! But yea, uuh I like the suggestion about copying the idealic anatomy. I can't be bothered to do that iten dorian stuff, the meticulous measuring, i really prefer Vilppus kind of strategy of eyeballing and correcting in the gesture phase with loose lines. If I can get as far as I have without a meticulous proportion measuring strategy, I'm sure I can make the rest work with just more experience.
But that measuring thing seems to just come from experience. I took out my hogarthe book and copied a torso, and spent an hour just refining little lines and creases in connection points, it felt like a workout ot be honest. The proportions are wrong of course, but I'm aware keenly now, of how they are wrong. And I intuitively understand now, that in the original, there is more space between the pectorals and the collarbones. Also noticed a lot of interesting things about how the deltoids fit into the ribcage and connect with the pectorals. I will try to do an hour of these a day, because it seems like it can only help. (don't need a holy war with ya john, we've gotten in some spats before, though honestly i can't even remember what it was about.)
I also feel a lot more productive if i have something to do for specifically an hour a day, it's like, something scheduled in that you can look forward to. As an INTJ, i hate rigid structure, but i can deal with "Hour a day" is easier psychologically than "anatamy at 10-11" on teusdays, etc.
As for this muskateer guy, I learned a good deal about workflow, and how WILDLY different mine is now than it was even a few months ago. I start with a gesture, with like just trying to make flowing lines, then i refine the gesture into tubes/boxes on a new set of lines. Then I do ANOTHER set of lines, adding anatomy to the tubes, fixing all kinds of shit along the way. In the end, the pose was not the best I could have settled on, and I need to just sketch more and think more about how to get a presentable pose, really comes down to that.
The legs bother me, but i like the hands, and I think the face has a cool personality. I just googled some reference for the costume, but the anatomy is from imagination, probably shoulda saved the body only version, it was a much tighter drawing. I didn't really render it because I feel the base is flawed, but i added some flat colors. I'm sure you're all well aware i can lay on the rendering.
But yea, Paizo, was the company i had in mind, since that stuff seems achievable at least for now. Maybe I'm totally wrong about that, but I look at some people I know who worked for them and I don't feel that's out of my league (throws up hands) Might be TOTALLY delusional of course! Maybe itll be another 4 years of 8+ hr practice days before i can even get some lower tier freelance jobs, we'll see. Probably not the case, could be right around the corner, just gotta like focus and get to it.
