chubbycat's sketchbook!
Back from the dead.. maybe. Happy new year to everyone.

Decided to, yet again, overhaul my life and my artistic direction. Took about a month off art as well which was really what I needed. So basically my focus for 2019 will be still on concept art but more on drawing and less on rendering. I've made myself a lil project so I'm hoping to buff up the portfolio with that and even perhaps try and turn it into something. That is if I can stop being so fickle :P

New character concept; a (viking) Jarl's ceremonial attire. Trying to find the sweet spot with keeping things largely historically accurate, but adding in small twists of fantasy. Really like the silhouette of 3, so might redesign the actual outfit for it.

Wow, nice evolution! You still see things as lines? Have a look on Drawing with the rigt side of the brain, there you will find some nice tips on perception while drawing! Try to see things as negative spaces!!! Loved your work and study!!!

@Fedodika thanks as always :) I'm going to push that design more, I think. Right now it's feeling more Daenerys Targaryen and less viking haha

@Matheus Chadtinet thanks man! I've heard of that book before but never properly looked into it. I'll see if I can get my hands on it! :)

------------------

Working on a bit of fanart so I can practice more line art + colouring/shading techniques and transfer what I've learnt to my concept art. So far it's just the lines and flats - any c&c is more than welcome. The value read killed me for a few days straight - orange hair on a fire engine red jacket ugggh. I like to put myself through hell by never making things easy, it seems

If anyone's interested there's a reference pic of the character in the spoiler tag.

its pretty good actually, you made her look better than the original actress IMO.

her (left side of the screen) shoulder looks very slightly sunk in.

And, i have a thing for the pouty hot model expression myself, just remember you can always experiment with different facial looks to convey character

Damn good observation, Fed. Thanks! I can't believe I missed the shoulder part :P Experimenting with facial features and expressions is something I want to explore in my next couple of pieces. I feel like I'm definitely too tied to the idea of trying to make every chick look like a model. It's a terribly hard habit to get rid of lol.

Managed to finish my piece. Any crit is welcome! I'm torn between liking it and wanting to set it on fire

@Slash Razor Thanks man, I appreciate your comments :) It's a fanart piece of a trash show called Riverdale. Basically the character is a rich girl, who is a total bitch but ends up joining a gang to be with her gf.

@Fedodika Yea lol. I'm going to try and push myself with my next few pieces for sure

------------------

Been working on another fanart/'drawthisinyourstyle' piece of Queen Ravenna. I changed a few things about it to try make it by own, and tried to do a face that's more expressive and less pouty. Through it I learnt I'm a lil bitch when it comes to lighting scenarios that aren't your basic top left/top right. It's something I need to work on

Again, chubbycat its very nice, very beautiful, just very safe with the front on perspective. I really like the slight tilt in the reference its very intense. Id say on your next piece take a risk and challenge yourself to get that solid look with a 3/4 pose and if ya aint strugglin ya aint learnin

@Fedodika Thanks Fed. Yea I really didn't nail the tilt of the head, which is the majority of why the reference is so great. Oh well, there's always next time!

------------------

Over the last week I worked on my viking archer concept and grew to hate everything about it. Nothing was right about it no matter how many iterations and explorations I did. The face, the pose, the weapon, etc, it was all just terrible. It wasn't portraying the character I wanted it to, and I felt like I was forcing in the archer aspect when it didn't fit the situation. I mean a ceremonial sword makes a lot more sense than a fricking bow.

So, I started over. I'm happy with how it's going now. I really wanted the design to be a bit deceptive - soft feminine read for the silhouette but all the details within the dress are sharp triangles/blades.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  [Image: tumblr_pnbems4QZh1xxah6io1_1280.jpg]

There's close ups in the spoiler tag if anyone is interested. Not sure what design I'll go with yet...

I like it just make sure the cape draping over the shoulder is acocunting for the entire form of the shoulder, right now it feels cut off and should be wider. Also the bottom of the dress feels very flat, like look at the first spoiler, at the bottom of the sword, you could draw a perfectly straight line to capture the contour of the cape and dress youve indicated. The second ones a little better. Is that dress so perfectly cut that it perfectly hits the contour of the floor with no cloth folding over itself? No air gaps? Thank about it ;)

@Fedodika I really have no excuse for how bad the bottom of the dress is haha. It was half laziness and half not knowing how the folds would work :P

Before moving forward with my concept piece I ended up doing some skirt studies to better understand folds in general and how fabric interacts with the floor when longer than the person wearing it.

Done me lineart. Ended up combining a few elements from both pieces. C&C always welcome :)

I never want to draw braids or viking knots again lmao

its very nice chubbycat, but that dress bottom is having that flat issue we talked about, just bring that contour out a little bit. If the bottom hits the floor, it pools out, it doesnt tangent with the bottom of the cloak, think about how itd really look, i know that sounds redundant, but clearly that sword is in front of the dress... why cant the dress occupy the floor around the sword? It feels sucked back to perfectly not overlap or conflict with the sword,

Thank about it ;)

@Fedodika Thanks for the crit man. Hmm that's a good point. The dress is based of this ref, so it's not a dress that completely hits the floor and pools out.

I'll play around with it and see what I can do. Maybe I need to indicate there is space between the ground and the bottom of the dress.

Reply
im gonna redline it so maybe you can see what im talking about, just weaving that perspective

the rectangle represents the dress distance at its furthest point, to the point at which it rests against the pelvis or legs, yours has no distance it just appears flat, try to just show the cloth going out more, even if it doesnt pool on the floor :D

@Fedodika Thanks for the draw through! It was super helpful! I think I've managed to implement your crit with the dress now. It feels a lot better, but I'm not sure if it's 100% there yet

----------

Started working on colour comps as well. I originally wanted the colour scheme to match the bird (a gyrfalcon) but now looking at it I don't want it to be so black and white. Not sure what colour comp I'll go with. Maybe bottom left or right

I think the shape of the dress is a bit strange, it should be more like a circle in perspective

cooooooooooooool stuff !!! keep going.  ^^
