Whew! So got through that okay hehe; Yea i think just doing these to warm up in the morning would be great, i see why so many ppl reccomend it.

Trying out a bunch of diff mediums on this, so in all i used some 4B pencil, 6B, charcoal stick, peel and sketch Charcoal stick, an old blue china marker, and a B pencil for some of the quicker gestures (which some i didn't scan cuz theyre too light.) You really gotta plan stuff out with charcoal because its so intense; probably do some face structure stuff tomorrow idk!

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-06-2017

Whoopin out poser today, OH NO! Seriously, its a great tool for setting up scenes, just make sure you don't actually use the figure they provide you as the end product with proportions, you'll regret it! These are some roughs for my one and only client and I usually don't share these, but I liked the lighting and the composition and setup, of course I'll start from a scratch line drawing should she like these and make sure all the fundies are straightened out

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-07-2017

working up a line drawing, really digging sargents venetian bead stringer series of paintings. Trying to stylize shapes here a little, and make things feel tranquil; enjoying it so far!

I keep wasting so much time throughout the day, i need to make a schedule. The 30 min gesture thing is doable, maybe i'll work in a mandatory hour of instruction vids a day just to stay sharp, even though I'm always trying to get sharper.

RE: Fedodika the Koala - xelfereht - 10-07-2017

looking good so far, curious what the story is there
making a schedule can be tough ey..
trying to work out a more efficient way to take in info too..
1 hr portrait a day was fine and figure drawings everyday was fine..
I tried swapping the lighting of 2 portrait photos yesterday and that was a bit heavier thinking to do
which was good and still manageable time wise..
wanting to do a character design a week.. but will see how that goes.
hour of instructional vids sounds good way to go.. i too often draw while watching that kinda stuff, i think i need to just sit and pay attention to it lol

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-08-2017

Xebro: hey thanks bro! I saw you doin that man, could be a good exercise, but i'd reccomend just drawing the shit out of heads or rather... maybe not doing that. Maybe learning as much stuff about structure/proportions and applying it would make the heads better. I've learned over the years painting improves as you draw, and only a little bit while you paint. May sound crazy or lopsided, but that's my experience

anways, spent a lot of time away from the house today, a really cool thing happened to me today money wise, but I'm not gonna share it because i don't wanna disclose financial info publicly. But to some it up, while downtown, i met a woman who wanted a commission, had her husband pay me cash on the spot; pretty crazy lol

SO just some gestures and some thumbnail studies i did of i think some magic cards; their setups are interesting, but not as complex as i used to remember them, was cool; need to pick a day and do like 100 of these haha

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-09-2017

Trying to finish this up, really like the mood i got. There are some issues with it, but I can't figure out how to fix it. The perspective kinda bugged me and i fooled with it a while, yet it felt right at the time, still does (my eye isn't hung up on it.) Could be totally wrong, but owell I'm impressed with the changes i made to my workflow and am satisfied with that kind of addition.

Did a fuckload of these things today, about 35 of em; really learn lots of stuff with this; gotta start on a new commission tomorrow and for once i can say I might be booked for the rest of the month! Not expecting that to be the case at that time, but it is a cool feeling. I find looking for the gesture at the beginning of the picture teaches me a lot and how the old masters almost like a game, lead the eye around the page in iconic shapes that resemble mainly letters like S,C,Y, for the most part. There's really something enriching about analyzing those old works, it feels like you're tapping into a wiser era, and you really can relate to these old dead painters on a level most people will never appreciate.

Also downloaded 3d coat for the free trial. I have this dude who wants a sci fi commission that's very complex so i thought I'd start trying some hard surface stuff soon to improve the workflow. Daz3d has been a big help but that stuff don't mean shit if you can make a good comp or paint it all together well. Was watching some Anthony Jones vids on it, seems quite simple to make cool shapes so I'll probably be posting some 3d stuff every now and then, we'll see!

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-11-2017

Heres some comps for a client; Liking my new workflow using 3d to quickly block out a scene. The poseable models end up for me like looking into the clouds for shapes, and i get so many ideas just by moving them in different directions. Then i use a quick photo or a bunch of layer modes to slop together some colors and end up with something that isn't hard on the eyes. It feels quite intuitive, but i know there's a lot of decision making involved that I couldn't fake years ago.

I also need to study the shit out of sargent, something about his work is just so fast and so charming; Really need to take notes on every little thing he's done, it could only help!

K, so still trying to learn this 3d coat stuff; I'm gonna try to post at least one thing tomorrow even if it sucks. But for most the day i was struggling to even make anything with the interface, but after a few hrs i've got a reasonable idea of how it works. The principles are similar to painting, start with the big shapes, stay in that as long as possible. Splitting up sections to change the materials/colors is really a big part of it; values basically.

Another big thing is knowing what to sculpt; the tools do an impressive amount of work and opening up things for you to exploit specially if symmetry is turned on. I'd reccomend scultping to ppl who have a  good visual library but poor drawing and painting skills; Its much easier to get the ideas out quick and have them look finished instantly. There were points i had to study some robot heads because I literally was just stuck i had no idea what mark to make next and i couldn't visualize. It's fun to run into those knowledge gaps sometimes

Tomorrow im gonna start learning some animal anatomy on NMA, watch a couple more anthony jones vids on 3d coat and maybe a few composition studies of sgt. I imagine if i get this 3d coat figured out I'll have this huge new world of tools to use in illustration. Daz is already a huge help and having a good 3d skill will let me do other genres like mechanical and science fiction stuff better; so this struggle should help alot!

Here's just a few things i had lying around of comp studies and applications.

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Artloader - 10-13-2017

Interesting workflow with the 3D stuff Fedo, some nice results there. I like your light and colour as well.

Keep it going mate!

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-13-2017

loader: thanks my man! Yea color is just something you feel; i really don't know how to explain it in an objective way tbh..

Didn't get much done today :/ Did however manage to try and sculpt at least something to show here; It's not great but I wanted to post as a reminder that I was at one point this clueless at 3D. That dog meme really sums up what I'm doing in there lol

Also tried to make some new comps for the client but was just struggling so much; I'm gonna write a list to do tomorrow and try to follow that to a T instead of wasting so much time I always feel terrible if I do

http://colorquiz.com/results.php?code=m,1,7,5,0,3,4,2,6,1,4,3,6,0,5,2,1,7,4&p=full

These are just thumbnail studies of various picnic paintings; Idk why women like picnics so much but it ends up being something i'm requested to draw quite a lot. Also started up the animal anatomy thing, again waisting a lot of time; try to fix that tomorrow!

yeah man, I agree with the drawing helping painting.
still the rendering side of things kills me too haha
nice piece you got going with the girl and the woman.
main thing that sticks out for me is the childs expression and pose still bit unnatural like shes hunched over but stiff too?
she looks a bit blank where as the sketch looked like a slight smile which was nicer.
as always, keep up the good shit
3D is fun but I feel the same, dunno what the fk im doing..

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-14-2017

Xebro: thanks man i completely agree with the crit; I hope the client who commissioned it will get back to me soon, she just had surgery and seems like it really weakened her. 3D is fun if you get a good idea of the tools in it and sculpt what you know i find! This guy has a great tutorial set for 3Dcoat which has a free trial and is what I'm currently trying
3d really tests your knowledge of anatomy; that's what I'm seeing https://gumroad.com/metalman123456123

So, watched some more tutorials today; I've gotten to where i just have a list of things to do and I cross em off so i don't forget all the things i wanna learn and practice.

Here is my hideous female body sculpture attempt lol; I'm gonna make this an ongoing project to try and get it to look anatomically correct. Right now the back is wrong, like i know the trapezius should be longer, something about the length of the thighs is bugging me, and of course she has no forearms or hands. I was surprised how much i could do just from memory though; Plus moving the camera around helps you see different angles and if things look funny.

But yea, getting a good idea of what tools do what and kinda treating it like drawing helps a lot; You know when you're making a line and trying to get it to look right? That's really similar to sculpting, you're trying to get that contour to look correct and some tools are great at achieving that.

Also some animal anatomy from NMA and some gestures i did; Really really love the middle one of the reclining pose; I was using a charcoal peel n sketch marker and just feeling the lines it had a really elegant look to it, hope i can achieve more like that

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-15-2017

aight so lots of cool stuff happened for me IRL today, but nothing online. Still managed some 30 minutes of gestures and I need to make some plans for tomorrow, but i'm too tired hehe ill sleep on it

K so, had an idea to do a portrait today since i hadn't done one in a while. Watched some steve Huston vids on lips before i started and holy moly my eye is so unforgiving now of even little inconsistencies. This line drawing took like 4 hrs of restarting, nudging things around, trying different approaches and everything. LOL I like the end result but im gonna keep tweaking it tomorrow because it aint spot on the reference. Painting it should be a breeze since the lighting is quite simple!

RE: Fedodika the Koala - neopatogen - 10-16-2017

Nice portrait Fedo! Yep color is much easier when you have construction and values down.
Those 3d-based sketches of yours are good but for some sunjective reason they creep me a bit :) Maybe because of lack of faces/creepy faces or rather, that eerie lighting mood in almost every scene.
Cool that you started 3d coat. 3d in general can be not only a means to cheat and save time, but you can also use it to check your 2d fundamentals. That's what I think! Keep posting mate :)

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-17-2017

Neo: Thanks! The portrait is not done yet! I wanna see how many mistakes i notice tomorrow as well for just an hour of working on it. Put the pics side by side and see all the differences. When i posted that, it was as far as my eye could take it which is deceptive and I bet I can make it even more accurate tomorrow! I agree the 3d things are creepy, but I'll get around to making em more appealing with i suppose some more limbs and some more flattering light settings hehe. 3D is cool as fuck! and that bike you did was killer Neo! <3

http://colorquiz.com/results.php?code=m,2,6,5,3,0,1,7,4,4,6,1,3,4,0,5,2,7,7&p=full

Did some more gestures, getting in a good habit of it just 30 mins a day on what was Pixelovely. Also some animal anatomy with the cow. Gonna get into doing some tracing over photos soon to learn animal anatomy better. I'm surprised how often I'm asked to draw animals so it can only help; particularly dogs and cats. Uhh tried to watch some Steve Huston vids on the nose but could barely pay attention, maybe first thing in the morning It'll be better haha; I truly can only learn so much every day, even if i try to force through it my brain just doesn't absorb at even 10% the normal rate

RE: Fedodika the Koala - Fedodika - 10-18-2017

man i need to take it a little easier tomorrow; i've been workin so much. I'm happy with where I'm getting but I just feel like im cramming in so much at once lel

Took it pretty easy today, so got a mentor thing tomorrow, then I'll be grindin them bones again. I did paint this portrait a bit more and I hate everything about it so it must be done lol as Mohrbacher would say!
