RE: Vandrake's sketchbook - cgmythology - 07-14-2023

Nice updates! I recommend spending a lot of time on form and structure of the human body (exactly what you did with your last sketch) to get a very solid feel of the human body. Do lots of these if you can, should help you improve considerably. Love that dragon sketch btw, great job on that one! Keep it up!

Nice one, great concept!

RE: Vandrake's sketchbook - darktiste - 07-21-2023

I recommend not necessarly drawing alot because it doesn't mean anything if you don't understand the subject matter.Focus on understanding proportion perspective and anatomy and you should be on a good start.Once you understand the importance of understand the subject matter you can start to draw alot but before that you must develop the ability to understand your subject.

Making sure you understand what you draw so it more solid.Focus on strong basic shape and building on that foundation until it goes from simple to complex organic shape.

I think you should also do more value study to help you understand the form line art is fine but it doesn't help see the inner shape(it the shape within the shape)

Nice work on the wizard-knight painting (6th image). The lighting looks good

RE: Vandrake's sketchbook - Bookend - 08-10-2023

darktiste speaks truth.

I've been a victim of this as well-- Still am to a certain extent, bad habits die hard, but gradually I've been moving in the right direction.

But, namely, it's really important to figure out the figures, or pretty much anything you're drawing, take the time you need to do so, to break it down and know where everything goes..

The best advice I ever got was from Dave Rapoza himself-- when you draw from reference or life, try drawing it once normally, while looking, and then don't look, and try to draw it.

It really helps to understand better and form it in your head so you can put it out on the page easier, it's also a great way to test your knowledge. :)

I digress! Some really nice sketches overall, so much potential for more, so I'm excited to see where you're going! :)

RE: Vandrake's sketchbook - darktiste - 08-20-2023

I would say make shorter post it going to discourage people to give you feedback if there many unlabeled work i myself have only recently made myself aware that to receive feedback you gotta give people a chance to do so and sometime you gotta spend that extra time on presentation.

Right now here something you can do for presentation. Reduce the amount of image per post and post more often in smaller post figure out how to have your image easy to see and not so small (you might need to adjust the quality of the image to fit the file size requirement of the forum).Make sure that when you take photo the direction of the light (nature or artificial) doesn't create shadow on your page (if the object that create the shadow is small or easy to move you can move it for the duration of the photo session if not try to get a lamp to help diffuse the cast shadow.

To have better photo avoiding light coming from window other room will help you get more consistent light in each picture... otherwise the cloud or the time of the day or time between photo can change and that can be problematic if you want to have clear picture.

RE: Vandrake's sketchbook - darktiste - 01-08-2024

Think more about ghosting the line before drawing and take bolder decision rather then small stroke which doesn't help you build confidence. If you are not going to be confident with your line making choose.Draw ellipse and line and curve and zigzag... that how you build the confidence.

A way to gain confidence is to trace over drawing believe it or not because you practice using the tool which is the pen and you get insight on how you can get different type of stroke. For example using the side of the tips of the pencil to make shade or how to use the pencil at a 90 degre angle to get a fineline. You get different result with different tool.
