Paul`s Sketchbook - PaulWhite - 08-28-2017

Hi everyone, i`ll be slowly updating this sketchbook, cause of day job and extra projects i have to do. Still fundamentals is the goal, so here`s some master, color studies of works that hooked my eye.

Colour studies are looking good so far :). Looking forward to seeing more of your work. Keep it up!

Hi.

It seems the lighting is everywhere. It's hard to tell where the sources are or how many are there in that particular piece.

Suggestions:

1. If you think the light setup is too overwhelming, scale the amount back to just one primary light source. If you haven't come across this, there's a head lighting reference in Art of Wei's youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA7mFUWlZjU) I refer to that when I do paintings so the light will be more or less consistent.

2. Here's a guide to planes of the head

Try googling, 'Asaro head'!

3. If that's complicated, scale back again and try to render a sphere! Check this one out: http://www.dorian-iten.com/shading-mistakes/

(Better yet, check everything Dorian Iten has to offer!)

Hey man, good luck! Sweet monster designs!

RE: Paul`s Sketchbook - devares - 10-24-2017

Nice stuff, man. Keep at it. Also, I think you should definitely work more on simplifying stuff, going straight for those primal geometric forms, and then adding anything and everything atop of it. Otherwise, it looks wonky. I'm struggling with it myself, so yeah, I'm there right with you on this trip. Cheers, man. ;)

And happy painting! :D

RE: Paul`s Sketchbook - PaulWhite - 10-25-2017

Thanks devares, yeah these gemetric forms is quite hard to do as you are starting out, asaro head does help a bit but still doodling to much..
