whew, so drew a ton of these just bodies in front back and profile today. bout 90% from imagination, i suppose its an exercise in Sycra's Iterative drawing concept and goodness it really showed me lots of cool things. I noticed this really stupid thing i do when i start an imagination drawing where i go for the most dynamic curve i can think of, which really compromises the quality of my drawings. it caused me to not care about proportions and just try to force the drawing to conform to the sweeping line i had drawn. You dont need a wildly dynamic gesture to make a pleasing drawing, just nice proportions and structure and maybe the slightest hint of a gesture/tilt.
Maybe im just now picking up on the subtlety of a standing pose. tomorrow im gonna draw more of these but try to add the neck and a blank head so i can incorporate that more efficiently. Then down the road keep doing these but adding say legs, or have a day or two where i just draw legs and nail the shape on its own in profile back and front view. Feels like a quite brilliant way to improve because you can keep making attempts at the most rudimentary shape until it looks and feels correct. I finally felt like some of these might actually look "pleasing" if i were to make the line quality better, so i'm looking forward to more of em!
