So I'm a somewhat intermediate digital artist (a few years of non-serious experience) and I'm looking to get a lot more serious about my training, since I want to achieve professional levels of expertise.

Currently I'm working on shape manipulation and structuralization, learning to draw forms in perspective, deconstruct forms into basic shapes, but all of my efforts have felt very... Loose, I think is the word. I feel like my learning is really lacking direction and structure, despite my willingness to put in the time.

Basically, I know what to practice--I just don't know HOW to practice it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello.
I'm new to art and was wondering if I'm heading in the right direction.
My ultimate goal is to draw characters.
I will first write what I draw every day, and then the points I don't understand and want an answer to.

- Page of atoms (circle and 4 ellipses in the main 4 directions inside)
- Page of (2 parallel lines + all variations of ellipses inside from circle to very narrow in the middle and then again to circle)
- Rotation of cube from imagination while maintaining proportions and convergence of the lines (30 min)
- Snakes made of wrapping lines (30 min)
- Gestures (45 min)
- Bent cylinders (25 min)
- Bent boxes (25 min)
- Twisted boxes (25 min)

1. Am I correct in understanding that one must first develop spatial thinking before taking on anatomy? (That's the reason I'm doing these exercises). Is there anything that needs to be added or removed from this list? Better/more interesting exercises maybe?

2. Twisted boxes. So far they're the most confusing to me. Is there any point in looking for a reference for them? Or should I draw them from imagination right away? I can't find anything for a reference. I use plasticine for the bent ones.

3. Gestures. I first drew on a timer (60-120 sec) but didn't notice much result. I switched to thoughtful drawing with thinking about each line and the movement/fluidity. So, should I use timer or not?

4. Snakes. Сomes out rather unevenly and with a not very believable perspective. Continue to draw or try to draw rings purely to practice the distance between the half-elipses and the smoothness of their turns? I don't understand the sharp turns.

Sorry for my english.

I want to start my journey on becoming a concept artist. I have a part-time job and art schools are expensive. That's why I'm going for the self-taught route. I know it will be hard and will require discipline but is very much achievable.

Can you guys recommend me a concept art curriculum or roadmap to start. I found Foundation Art Group/Patreon. And I think their materials are a good source for learning. I'm overwhelmed with the tutorials and don't know where to start really.

Also my problem with self-taught is i don't know if I'm on the right path, I might develop bad study and drawing habits along the way. I need a mentor of some sort or criticism of my work.

Btw is this a good guide?

In the distant past I tried a variety of drawing/painting software but mostly stuck to two of them. Things are evolving fast though and I'm interested in hearing which ones you use and why you picked these over the others. I'm mostly intrigued by the various brush engines, however I'd like to keep this discussion open to any feature so everyone can find a useful bit in it.

Back then I spotted three different brush technologies: Predominantly robotic brushes, awkward traditional simulation, limited-use wild experiments. None of them was of my liking and I started to develop my own brush engine - only started, because I had underestimated the time this would take.

There are now maybe a hundred different applications, brush engines have gotten much better, some are configurable to an extreme degree. I guess my dream engine would be something midway between digital and traditional, with controlled dynamic color mixing but not all the way to impasto simulation.

Basically, whenever I'm sketching a person, either in a realistic style or a cartoony one, the head always comes larger than the rest of the body! Afterwards, I always have to scale it down. It doesn't matter if I start with the body or with the head, it always comes out disproportionate. And it isn't just part of the head, it's the whole thing.

This doesn't happen with other body parts. The hands, feet, legs and arms are all in proportion to each other. It's just the head that comes out to big

Any tips to correct this?

Over the past few days, I've been second guessing what I've been doing lately, feeling that maybe I'm not going in the best direction improvement wise. I understand that bad days or even weeks can happen. But I still want the time I'm putting in to be worth something.

My original plan was to focus on figures and posing with simple mannequins, then gradually build them from slightly more complex shapes after doing a set number (50). I'd look over day old studies for things to improve. After reaching a point where things look much more natural, I'd start focusing on applying anatomy. To help me use what I'm studying, I'd work on requests so I wouldn't have to worry about doing something that I'd be too attached to.

I haven't felt like anything I've made lately has been worth posting (I know that sounds stupid). But based on what I have, does it seem like I should keep doing this or change things up? Whatever advice you have is welcome.
