First time in this forum, I found it through Gosia's Facebook page.

Title: Visiting Grandma
Description of Scene: A small girl wearing a witch's hat and holding a wand, with a carpet bag beside her is standing on the path leading to a cottage, looking towards the door. Old, thin woman is standing at the door looking towards the girl, she is dressed modernly and is holding a phone. Both look surprised and embarrassed. Cottage is old fashioned with dark forest in the background.

Contrasts: Old/new, young/old, little/tall?, round/skinny?

Story: A little witch is coming to visit grandma. Wanting to please her grandma she is trying hard to go old school with wooden wand, pointy hat etc. Grandma has opened the door to reveal a very modern appearance, holding a phone attached to VR goggles.

Problems / Questions / Things to develop:
Whether to have both faces visible or have the girl facing away from the camera.
Need to figure out what mood lighting I want, currently it doesn't seem to be giving anything to the scene.
Currently the background isn't really giving anything to the mood. Narrative seems too plain and 1 dimensional.

I'm currently favouring the 3rd thumbnail but worried about having a character facing away from the camera.

I think I have a tendency to make my themes too complicated and subtle so this time I want to make my idea so clear and simple, and really smack the viewer over the head with it so they really can't miss it, and then put a lot of energy into the facial expressions and composition to make it beautiful and interesting. That's my goal anyway!
Not sure if I should bash out another few sets of these concepts, I did 6 so far, these are the better ones. I really like the 'she wants an adventure' one and the 'giant and the acrobat' one. But still not sure if I should keep digging.

First off; sorry for the horrible quality of the photos, I'll do a better job on that next time!

Those are my earliest sketches right after the researching phase. I was kind of sad that I didn't keep the cute'n'creepy bearded dude, but somehow he didn't quite feel right for the contest, also I couldn't tell wether he should be a creature or a humanoid, so I went for a clearer design.

The color thumbnail is the only step in the painting I kept; somehow I'm bad at keeping the stages, the urge to merge the layers is too big!! Also, next time

A few hours into the painting, I didn't like the color scheme anymore, especially because I've used exactly that one in my previous finished painting and I wanted to push myself to go out of my comfort zone (and I wanted to go for a more subtle color scheme).

Alright, this is the first time i post here.

In the images below you'll find my entry for the challenge, a wip and some of the images which inspired me the most. I did not include the references i used because there's way too many of them and i don't really see the point. I think it's way more useful to see what made me take the direction i took with the image.

The first picture is my entry,
I wanted to have a VERY low light setting, where the eyes would almost have to adjust to the dark before everything becomes clear. I only rendered some crucial details, leaving most of the image in shadow, to go with the dark and mysterious feel.

The second picture contains some images which inspired me a lot.
The red one on the right may not look like much but it made me go from landscape to portrait. Until then i was sure i wanted a big scene where the two figured would appear in their natural habitat, doing stuff. But i figured a portrait would make the figures tower over the viewer while also seeming more unsettling because of the verticality. Maybe.

And finally, if you're really interested, the third picture contains a few steps for the final image.
I actually managed to stick to the initial sketch, which is a huge victory for me. The absurd amount of shadow probably helped a lot.
Also sorry for making my thread so late. I'm gonna try to finish it before the deadline of course.
Looking at it now the portrait looks pretty lame.. Guess I'll have to fix that. Btw can anyone guess what the painting on the wall is referencing? And yea I know it's not very convincing as a painting but ahh well.
