@xelfereht Thanks again Andrew!! I ended up applying a similar layer to it (might have done a few adjustment layers, actually lmao) and I think it looks a lot better. The final version is below. You're right about needing to use ref to get more interesting shadows. I'll make sure I'm doing that going forth :)

Been colouring my latest skater. Tried to apply shading feedback from the other skater onto this one. Might have pushed it a bit too warm though? Going to try keep pushing the shapes with it (feel like I can take the jacket shadows further cause 80's windbreakers often had lots of crinkles and folds to them)

In over my head and out of my depth with these things I've been working on lately. Trying to experiment and get out of my comfort zone with simplifying faces/expressions and using colour. The rainbow piece turned out a lot more 70's inspired than first intended lmao. Forced myself to experiment with light and did a bit of a Dark Side of the Moon inspired version (or Rainbow Road, take your pick)

you're doing a real nice job with this skater series
If you wanted to delve deeper you could watch some vids of skaters and try to pull out some of the nuance of their posture and hands and so on.
some of the images have more of the feeling to them while some feel a bit stiff or manikin like.
the colour choices seem to be developing in a good way and your look is developing so keep up the good shieett!

@xelfereht Thanks Andrew!! Great suggestion - it's something I did try in the past but finding good videos that aren't filmed with a fisheye lens are a bit of a struggle lmao. Managed to find some good skate vids and pulling action poses from those. Will definitely keep doing that and practising poses from videos :)

Starting a new character for the crew with designing the board. Angling towards a sassy grim reaper for the theme. Really want to try a different board style where the deck is just a base colour (or gradient) and then the image on top is like a coloured sticker outline. Kinda like the decks in the spoiler tag (they're a lot, but it's got those 80's vibes to them yea) but I ain't like married to the idea yet, so we'll see where this goes

Mm, yes my favourite type of character to draw; a degenerate.
Playing around with asymmetry for this design. Already hard passing on design 5 (in an attempt to have 80s vibes it just ended up having grandma vibes instead lmao fml)

Already have a clear colour palette idea in my head of red/yellow/black/white - a bit typical but will explore how to change it up

To me all the last designs work in one way or another but some read very feminine, which you could use to your advantage maybe do a skater-girl. I think the reason is having the face so abstracted makes everyone able to fill in with whatever they want (like in comics), probably giving it a very manly face would change that since the body clearly reads the part. Are you holding off on what face you are gonna make for this one? (placeholder?)

The skate decals all work for me except the 5th one mainly it's trapped on a washing machine but bite me attitude clashes with the intended message (kinda like having word "red" in green color).
The coolest is probably 2 and my personal fav is 6 because ha ha, sitting there but it's a skateboard so made for moving is surreal contrast and really goes well with the "bite me" antagonizing attitude.

@Rotohail Thanks for the crit! Looking over the designs again; you're very right that they look quite feminine. Those 80's vibes are hard to get. I ended up playing with the designs a fair bit, so hopefully they are reading more masculine (I think my main issue was the pants were waaaaay too high lmao). A skater girl is 100% on my list for a future character design.
Good point re the face. For the thumbnails I do normally do a placeholder face with the intention of focusing on the clothing rather than getting caught up in the face. I intend to capture just the essence of the character, though perhaps it's working to my disadvantage instead LOL.

Lmao for the decks I'm glad you like 2 and 6 because those have been the two designs I have been perusing haha. 2 is a good action themed design. But you can't beat the sass of 6 - it's very 'i do what i want'

Exploring more for this dude. Need to find more cohesion between the outfit motif and board without it being the exact same concept and theme. The pants patterns (par the last one) feel a bit too surfer maybe

These are all awesome, really admire that you're really sticking to this theme and keep exploring it!

About the designs being effeminate, I don't think that's a negative, some of those clean 80's styles look really effeminate to me anyway, I think it's part of the charm of the 80's!

These look great! So many pieces you've created, each with a very strong technical illustration. Love the use of colors here as well, very well done with just the perfect amount of saturation. Keep it up!

@JyonnyNovice Thanks for stopping by and the comments! I agree that a lot of 80's fashion reads quite effeminate (mainly by todays standards). Things like 80's hair bands is a good example of fashion considered more masculine then but not so much anymore. The 80's is definitely proving to be a fun decade to explore.

Couple of drawings and things. I'm really really struggling with the interaction image (they are supposed to be playing hot hands/slapsies/whatever you wanna call it). The perspective part has me stumped - I had an original ref image, frankensteined it and tried to invent too much for it and got myself confused (LOL) so ended up mocking it up in 3D. What my brain can't wrap itself around is if the arms and legs (on the other side of the wall) make sense or not. Excuse temp faces and shitty folds, etc. more focused on getting the base correct first

try moving the camera angle in your figure posing thing above or below the characters, you can also cheat a head further out if you want to show the expression despite the perspective. Loopeydave had an old tutorial where he showed that even if the pose wouldnt really work in real life you can cheat a bit to make the head show more and if its in an unusual enough angle, the audience will forgive it since they dont see that angle often!

Love that action effect on the ground in the second image, really feels like he just kicked off : D

In your first image, I think the character with his back to us, you wouldn't see his left leg at all (like in the 3d render). If that looks weird, maybe design the wall to have some gaps in it, so we can see his foot hanging down on the other side? I think the hands and arms look fine, reading the action is possibly more important than being totally realistic? Like Fedo was getting at. It does feel to me more like they're holding hands than playing slapsies, I think in that game their fingers would be touching each other's palms, not as far down as the wrists (but I may be wrong, haven't played that game since primary school xD). It's a pretty hard action to sell in a single image! If you could show some more of the backs of one of their hands and redden up his fingers it could help some more. To really sell it I guess doing it 'mid slap' with some action trails and a pained expression from the other one could be an idea.
