i do keep a sketchbook just for quick sketches of ideas while i read so i have a ton of ideas to pick up

24 Mar 20:45

Hobitt

yeah tolkien is other end of the spectrum lots of detail grand descriptions

24 Mar 20:43

Gliger

I've always thought that lovecraft is the absolute best thing to read when you don't know what to draw, forget tolkien, forget asimov. His stories leave so much to you imagination

On another news, my kim jung gi 2011 sketchbook just got here

and the descriptions very subtle and minimal yet open up the iamgination so much

24 Mar 20:36

Gliger

Yeeeah, it's awesome because the best part of his stories isn't the story itself but the (wait, what if there is a world underwater? what if that guy actually is a being from another world?)

24 Mar 20:34

Some people do their studies with cubes instead of spheres, it's harder, but apparently it pays off

24 Mar 20:32

Gliger

--

Because textures aren't defined the same way in light than in dark

24 Mar 20:31

Gliger

I don't do material studies from life, unless it's a still life or something. Because not usually you have an animal at your disposal to study fur. It's better to do it from life, but photos also work, a little piece of advice is, grab various photos for the same material study, that are lit in different ways.

24 Mar 20:29

Gliger

As if it were a 3D sphere with that texture on the surface.

24 Mar 20:28

Gliger

--

That image is not a reference for studying materials, those are his studies. He/She grabs a couple photos, or real life materials and draws them over a sphere
