I'd say the point of left hand sketches is to focus more on the lines you need to create and to break up deeply ingrained habits, which can be supplemented by just keeping that in mind.

Observation cannot be under-estimated. I find that even without drawing, just by observing and especially this year I've noticed vast improvement. You've probably noticed this if you practice this.

Stardust, try opening the reference on photoshop itself, then dragging the window out so it floats. It should stay always on top of other photoshop windows
