Hmm... true. But sometimes it's hard to tell if you're branching out or becoming out of focus when it comes to portfolio building..

as long as EVERY single piece is representative of your best work to date

Well I would say it's fine to have examples of everything you like doing and can do. But there has to be a sense of integration to the work. I wouldn't put graphic design into an illustration/design folio

Here's another question. Is it smart to throw in a lot in a portfolio? Environment, characters, graphic design? As opposed to being mainly focused on one thing?

If I nail it, there will be many more from them.

I'm really enjoying it actually...of course I'm taking longer than I should on the basic silhouettes etc, but I want to get it as you said, to the best of my capability at this time

John

That's sounds like a sharp turn haha!

05 Jul 15:08

Amit Dutta

--

haha beats me. I think they liked my sci fi stuff?

05 Jul 15:07

John

I see your work, and it's tons of environment stuff. And then you get to work on creature design?

05 Jul 15:07

Amit Dutta

--

which one?

05 Jul 15:07

John

--

Yeah yeah. I'm wondering how you got to pull of this Jedi mind trick of a stunt.

05 Jul 15:06

Amit Dutta

even if I haven't painted a stroke

05 Jul 15:05

Amit Dutta

if they flake out, I keep it :)

05 Jul 15:05

Amit Dutta

--

I always get 1/2 up front

05 Jul 15:05

Amit Dutta

--

1/2 1/2. They just want a basic concept, US200. Figured it was a good ratio.

05 Jul 15:05

John

--

That's a crap shoot. Creature stuff on spec? Or money up front?

05 Jul 15:04

Amit Dutta

--

My usual hourly rate is 40US, and I do tend to stick to it...but mostly I go overtime if I'm not happy with the piece

05 Jul 15:03

Amit Dutta

bahahaha

05 Jul 15:03

John

You weren't kidding when you said you're indian. You guys do a lot for less!

05 Jul 15:02

Amit Dutta

--

who am I to say no :P

05 Jul 15:02

Amit Dutta

--

clients do make me lol. Hey we love your stuff....awesome...can you do this creature? *no creatures to be seen in my stuff

05 Jul 15:01

Amit Dutta

--

I started going niche on environments, but now I'm branching out

05 Jul 15:00

Amit Dutta

--

Mostly now, I just push myself by accepting stuff that I wouldn't normally do. Eg got some creature concepts to do, had a bunch of figure focused stuff to do, and possibly spaceship design as well. None of these are in my folio

05 Jul 14:59

Amit Dutta

I am trying to do that stunt a lot less extremely and a bit smarter haha

05 Jul 14:59

Amit Dutta

--

We don't get any monetary benefit from the time spent...but besides the warm inner glow of helping people, I've now learned skills like how to approach people, and work with them. collaborate and delegate stuff. Project management in a loose sense. 4 months ago I was anxious about contacting big name artist for this...now it's no big deal.

05 Jul 14:58

John

--

How often do you do that stunt?

05 Jul 14:57

Amit Dutta

--

ah no worries if it doesn't, it was my choice to do that after all. He didn't force me to use 3D :) That brings up another point like with CC.

05 Jul 14:57

John

--

But that story is just insane. That at least a weeks worth of running the show at a very low rate haha!

05 Jul 14:56

John

--

Man I hope the show takes off.. Citizen Kane slow clap for you!

05 Jul 14:56

Amit Dutta

--

I'm totally gonna moving matte the shit out of my next enviro paintings haha

05 Jul 14:55

Amit Dutta

--

So yeah, that's the trade-off with perfectionism and pushing past your limits, with client work. If you do it big, you might lose big on the money side, but there was a LOT of upskilling involved, so I'm pleased with that

05 Jul 14:54

he agreed wholeheartedly
