Nobody's designs are exactly what I think will be really, really fucking cool. That's why I want to do it myself. :-)

Amit Dutta

well good then

03 Jul 17:58

Mechanizoid

TBH, there really isn't anyone who draws what I want see

03 Jul 17:58

Amit Dutta

--

of course

03 Jul 17:57

Mechanizoid

--

You can't deny that he draws well

03 Jul 17:57

Mechanizoid

--

Well that's a taste thing

03 Jul 17:57

Amit Dutta

--

I personally don't like Scott's designs much haha

03 Jul 17:57

Mechanizoid

--

And Scott Robertson

03 Jul 17:57

Mechanizoid

That is why I love Terryl Whitlatch so much :-)

03 Jul 17:56

Mechanizoid

My two big loves are creatures and spaceships

03 Jul 17:56

Amit Dutta

--

but that's what they want me to do. Clients are real funny sometimes

03 Jul 17:56

Mechanizoid

--

Oh man, if you draw some creature and spaceship concepts, I'll have to drop by to see!

03 Jul 17:56

Amit Dutta

--

or spaceship design....

03 Jul 17:56

Amit Dutta

--

I don't have a single creature concept in my folio

03 Jul 17:56

Mechanizoid

--

Oh, yeah, you are totally right. If your self-critical thinking stops at "this sucks, I should just stop" it is pointless and should be ejected out the airlock.

03 Jul 17:56

Amit Dutta

--

Yeah mostly illustration. I am working on creature concepts now, and might even get some spaceships and stuff to design haha

03 Jul 17:55

Mechanizoid

--

Or concepting as well?

03 Jul 17:55

Amit Dutta

--

Being self-critical alone isn't enough. I guess it has to also be objective and constructive self-criticism.

03 Jul 17:55

Mechanizoid

--

So do you mostly do illustration work, Amit?

03 Jul 17:54

Amit Dutta

--

for illustration anyway

03 Jul 17:54

Amit Dutta

--

Later on, once a lot of the technique stuff is handled (in terms of being able to identify weaknesses) crit starts to become about the more intangible stuff. Narrative, emotion, impact etc...

03 Jul 17:54

Mechanizoid

--

Yes. In my case I tend to be very self-critical, but still, I often don't know what I'm doing wrong, so outside help is critical.

03 Jul 17:53

Mechanizoid

--

I mean, those are the two insights I got from listening to external sources.

03 Jul 17:53

Amit Dutta

--

totally. Early on I also think you haven't learned how to self critique properly, and so it is very important to get outside help

03 Jul 17:52

Mechanizoid

--

And draw shit for fun.

03 Jul 17:52

Mechanizoid

--

The biggest insight I've had so far is that I need to DO THE HOMEWORK when it comes to learning my fundamentals... duh.

03 Jul 17:52

Mechanizoid

--

TBH, I find most of my insights come from drawing and messing up and realizing what isn't working.

03 Jul 17:51

Amit Dutta

--

Not because I've mastered anything, I know there's a lot to improve on. But yeah haven't got something that made me think, oh wow that really showed me something new about my stuff I need to work on for quite some time. Still holding out hope that I will keep getting them

03 Jul 17:51

Mechanizoid

--

lol

03 Jul 17:49

Amit Dutta

--

honestly...not a lot anymore.

03 Jul 17:49

Mechanizoid

--

That's a great approach! How often do you get a "diamond in the rough"?

03 Jul 17:48

Amit Dutta

--

I ALWAYS listen and accept every crit/opinion I get with equal weight, most of the time it's nothing new or groundbreaking, so I just discount it. But when I get a true gem of a crit or opinion, man I apply that shit immediately!
