--Hi guys
05 Feb 05:35
--naw, not easy working and working on portfolio simultaneously... did that before. But getting pressure for now working is also very distracting. There's gotta be a balance somewhere
05 Feb 05:34
--Yeah i was just thinking that sounds like a great record to be able to work in illustration studio honing your skills
05 Feb 05:34
--Yup, for the small time it had a developent studio here in Brazil. Now every big one closed down here
05 Feb 05:33
--It is not easy when 12h of your days go to something else - but this last 5 months I dont have time to practice anymore due to freelance, so I am just now making the switch. Quit my day job so I can continue practice and portfolio building
05 Feb 05:32
--Actually, I have been working in a illustration studio for a while now (6 years, minus de 10 months of Ubisoft until it closed down here). I have taken it seriously a bit after Ubisoft, to practicing everyday and taking online classes
05 Feb 05:32
--to keep people around you from ... for not having a job, and for your own good too, somehow
05 Feb 05:31
--it might be best if you have some kind of day job while building up portfolio for a year or two
05 Feb 05:29
--Ursula do you work exclusively in freelance, and how long did it take to become pro?
05 Feb 05:27
--I hate folks like that who take advantage of talent, when they know nothing about the craft
05 Feb 05:19
--sometimes i would do 16 hours in one day just to make a deadline and then theyd blow me off for a week and act like they didnt even want it after they told me they absolutely needed it the next day
05 Feb 05:17
--i had a odd job for a while where all i did was trace photos on to vellum and shaded it with tiny stippling dots for 8 hours at a time lol
05 Feb 05:16
--fair play, I'm not exactly living the dream yet, yeah I did the gd crap and 3d rendering for a while. However for now illustraion is the goal.
05 Feb 05:14
--i did a little graphic design for a while but i was bad at it and didnt like what i was doing
05 Feb 05:12
--Send portfolios too, that HELPS - it's not everyone that will featured on Kotaku or CGhub front page, but there are more jobs than that
05 Feb 05:11
--ah so you just posted your stuff all over the internet until the jobs came to you. I was hoping in a year to be good enough but now Im thinking it'll take me more thana few years comparing my current skill to yours D:
05 Feb 05:11
--Are you thinking/planning about artbooks or other personal works in the coming future?
05 Feb 05:08
--2 years? Though I have been lousy at pushing it. I never submitted my portfolio anywhere. So build a nice portfolio and make a push every 3 to 5 months should be effective from what I am getting here.
05 Feb 05:07
--Ursula just out of curiosity, how long did it take from the time you really started promoting yourself to get free lance job offers?
05 Feb 05:04
--Interesting, and Santos works mostly in traditional? So he can print the copy and sell the original.
05 Feb 05:01
--Its not the ability to hussle - its have a nice communication, understanding requests and never disappearing. Its a trust relationship, and its not that easy to build. If you can deliver that AND quality, you're gold
