Scott mcloud is good, I'd also highly recommend the Dc comics guides to comic's series and Framed Ink

I've a few comic ideas, I've already sektched plots for. The problem is the refinement and quality of them - putting in the muscle takes time and hard graft.

Indeed ip's for artists are a must. I'd do anything for the practice and refinement but sequentials and comics are on the list.
