An also another one, who is a creature designer, he was on the frontpage of cghub not too long ago, he has a series of 3D illustrations of an alien bug predator creature, long arms, bug eyes, there is an illustration of 2 of those creatures fighting, one old one young.

Let's see if you guys can help me, I'm lokking for an artist I saw on cghub about a year ago, he has a very stylized manga-wester style, very strong line, works with color, I remember an ilustration of a cowboy in the right side, aiming at us a little bit to our left

So use them as accents, small details you want to make sure are attention grabbing. Not for "shading", not for large areas. Not a rule though - just a guide. Some people can make black sing - but until you're there too, be very careful with it

Ursula Dorada

Pure black an white are accents. They are pure and too strong - so big areas with flat values over them you give your piece a very graphical aspect. That is not what you're usually looking for, specially with the type of art we see here

Mr. Toodles

assuming, you use the 10 step regularly, then yes i'd say so haha. Using 100% white and black looks strange when you try to paint with it anyways

dam, scott robertsons book is solid

Lyraina

or is this just a fancy way to say "be careful with pure black/white"?

20 Jan 04:29

Lyraina

--

Sorry if this is a stupid question - but how do I know what staying "1 value step" away from pure black/white means? Does that assume a 10 step value scale, so it would mean to use a range from 10-90% brightness?
