--Line drawings are also hard haha.. here is the trick: painting (color and value) and drawing (lines) are two different skill sets. You do have to practice both. :) So hang in there, you will get a gist of it soon enough

--Personally I like using color balance to do the first coloring pass, than overlay/soft and hard light layers to adjust over it. Color balance adjustment layers have this "preserve luminosity" option that will keep your values intact. The layers over them WILL mess your values though, so beware.

--Yeah values will effect the colors quite a bit. Learning the different layer modes for adding color is a little rough at first, still haven't figured it out completely.
