Sure

I think Joe Haldeman got the idea from some physics speculation though

Amit Dutta

The fiction bit is relevant

30 Jun 02:27

Mechanizoid

--

purely speculative of course

30 Jun 02:27

Mechanizoid

Nah, someone did the maths once, Carl Sagan mentioned it

Science fiction man

30 Jun 02:26

Mechanizoid

Well propulsion speculation books

30 Jun 02:26

Mechanizoid

Yeah, but collapsar is an old term for black hole :-) And I've seen "black hole gates" described in science books

30 Jun 02:26

Amit Dutta

--

They are basically......stargates! Lol

30 Jun 02:25

Amit Dutta

--

Pretty much...the tech isn't described as black hole gates in the book..I just used your words :)

30 Jun 02:25

Mechanizoid

--

don't black holes just rip you apart with tidal forces if you get near them?

30 Jun 02:24

Mechanizoid

--

the concept doesn't seem to be the same as a wormhole

30 Jun 02:24

Mechanizoid

--

I heard about "black hole travel" in books and stuff, but I can't find any details on how black holes could make travel shorter

30 Jun 02:24

Mechanizoid

--

I am a bit confused by that

30 Jun 02:24

Amit Dutta

--

No so, the book was using "collapsers" I jist looked it up, so yeah black hole gates or something

30 Jun 02:23

Mechanizoid

--

That would... kind of totally suck, LOL

30 Jun 02:22

Mechanizoid

--

What if we found out it worked in reverse, the faster you went the longer the trip seemed to the travellers?

30 Jun 02:22

Mechanizoid

--

With FTL travel, though, how would time dilation apply?

30 Jun 02:22

Amit Dutta

--

Oh yeah that might be it

30 Jun 02:22

Mechanizoid

--

I was amused that the "micro-ton" grenades would only be as powerful as a firecracker

30 Jun 02:22

Amit Dutta

--

Hmmm. I can't remember to be honest...I thought it was just ftl drives of some sort, but I might be wrong

30 Jun 02:21

Mechanizoid

--

And you had to travel at relativistic speeds to get to the portal.

30 Jun 02:21

Mechanizoid

--

He used the idea of naturally occuring black hole gates, right?

30 Jun 02:21

Mechanizoid

--

I was listening to that on CD, but the disk was broke. :-(

30 Jun 02:21

Amit Dutta

--

Sci fi of course

30 Jun 02:21

Mechanizoid

--

Unless you only get around in generation ships that crawl at 1 to 10% C

30 Jun 02:20

Amit Dutta

A great book that covers that, and war, is by joe halderman, called the forever war. So good

30 Jun 02:20

Mechanizoid

--

Yeah, it is a very big factor in fast space travel

30 Jun 02:20

Amit Dutta

--

Yeah it always annoys me how time dilation is mostly ignored

30 Jun 02:19

Mechanizoid

--

Makes for poignant SF stories though!

30 Jun 02:19

Mechanizoid

I don't know of relativistic travel will ever be possible, but you don't get star wars that way either. Just lonely astronauts who can never return to the world they knew. :-)

Gotta hold out hope :)
