Total conversion rocket? Like the Torchship!

Conversion my friend conversion

People have worked out the maths... and stuff, and capturing even a little bit of the sun's power could drive hundreds of ships to the stars.

I love speculative sci fi

Look at the Sun. XD

But we tend to ignore that such energy reserves are avaialbe in space.

Lol einsteins law is a fly in the ointment

Mech man - you're like a walking encyclopedia on spaceship theory!

30 Jun 02:05

Mechanizoid

--

It does

30 Jun 02:05

Amit Dutta

--

It also takes a huge amount of energy to move things at near relatavistic speeds

30 Jun 02:05

Mechanizoid

--

Oh, definitely. That is the fly in the ointment. Also, you need insane amounts of power for good thrust.

30 Jun 02:05

Amit Dutta

Easier said than done to efficiently convert the energy from photons into propulsion I think, but I know nothing about the theory

30 Jun 02:05

Mechanizoid

I am going to draw some at some point.

30 Jun 02:04

Mechanizoid

--

Yup. :P

30 Jun 02:04

Artloader

LOL ... maths and stuff!

30 Jun 02:03

Mechanizoid

A chemical rocket would require a literally astronomical amount of fuel to reach a high enough speed for interstellar travel.

30 Jun 02:03

Mechanizoid

--

His concept was literally a light-rocket, which converted matter to energy and exhausted said energy as massless radiation. It works better for reaching high speeds because... maths, and stuff. LOL

Robert Forward came up with the staged sail, but people had already talked about them earlier.

30 Jun 02:01

Mechanizoid

--

No, that was later

30 Jun 02:01

Which are light particles?

30 Jun 02:01

Amit Dutta

--

Did he also come up with laser sails?

30 Jun 02:01

Mechanizoid

The exhaust is not hot gasses, put photons.

30 Jun 02:01

Artloader

What's a photon rocket as opposed to a normal rocket?

30 Jun 02:00

Mechanizoid

--

People don't talk much about photon rockets these days, they probably aren't practical. But the implications of these kinds of voyages are mind-blowing.

Bye John!

Laters John!

30 Jun 02:00

Amit Dutta

Cya john!

30 Jun 01:59

John

--

Ooh smart talk! That's my cue to bail out! Later guys!

30 Jun 01:59

Mechanizoid

So he suggested using a rocket propelled by the fasted thing the universe– light

30 Jun 01:59

Mechanizoid

--

And he also pointed out the limit factor of a rocket is its exhaust velocity

30 Jun 01:59

Mechanizoid

--

We just need a way to travel very close to C

30 Jun 01:59

Eugene Sanger pointed out that Relativity is not an obstacle to reaching any point in the known universe, because of time dilation
