At any point you can interject further studies as needed. Obviously separating colors is a preferential thing.

Understand the brief > start with some basic ideas + reference > Thumbnails/sketches/broad design > revision > Detailed Full res drawing/valuesketch + settled design > Colors > details and rendering > Finishing process

Of course everyone has a different process. Like James Gurney he creates his creatures and then use those as a model to draw his illustrations. And also small quick sketches, which then he uses those to create a bigger illustration.

But from what I am understanding thus far from all the illustrations is : 1. Research/Write down the overall theme 2. Gather reference 3. Thumbnail sketches 4. Study 5. Apply what you studied to the chosen thumb sketch 6. Finalize?

Decided to hop on since I was checking one last time to the shoutbox, but now you said that I am gonna try to specify a bit more. Alright. We learn about anatomy, perspective, composition, flow, gesture etc. all of the necessary techniques, but I guess the main question is, what would be the process from start to finish with image making. Like from what I notice I think there was a hierarchy somewhere about this.

Speaking to Hermi's question on illustration process, without specifying any steps at all, because workflows can vary so much, the most fundamental way I think about it is that one should always go from solving the biggest problems first to iteratively solving smaller and smaller ones as you go, until you see no more, time's up or you can't stand to look at it any more.

So cool. I can see a bit of the Daedelus starprobe engine in the spaceship in that Mike Hill piece.

Yeah, that one is much more like a movie frame, love it!

I'm studying from Scott Robertson right now. :-) That guy is so amazing.

https://cdn1.artstation.com/p/assets/ima...1443927092 this one for example is more of a narrative illustration that could be a movie frame or sth, but its from the same guy

29 Jun 16:36

Mechanizoid

Well I already know I want to specialize in realistic spacecraft design, and more on the concept side of things.

29 Jun 16:35

Jan Kloidt

--

yeh, it all comes down to where your interests lie & really getting into that

29 Jun 16:34

Mechanizoid

--

But with specialization I can see the point. Someone who decides to specialize in vehicle design will emphasize different skills than someone who illustrates a fantasy wargame.

It seems somewhat irrelevant to study, though. Whether you choose to go into concept art or illustration, you have to be able to draw and paint well.
