--Yeah, that one is much more like a movie frame, love it!
29 Jun 16:36
--https://cdn1.artstation.com/p/assets/ima...1443927092 this one for example is more of a narrative illustration that could be a movie frame or sth, but its from the same guy
29 Jun 16:36
--Well I already know I want to specialize in realistic spacecraft design, and more on the concept side of things.
29 Jun 16:35
--yeh, it all comes down to where your interests lie & really getting into that
29 Jun 16:34
--But with specialization I can see the point. Someone who decides to specialize in vehicle design will emphasize different skills than someone who illustrates a fantasy wargame.
29 Jun 16:34
--It seems somewhat irrelevant to study, though. Whether you choose to go into concept art or illustration, you have to be able to draw and paint well.
29 Jun 16:33
--yeh, it's actually not that hard to do if you are at the skill level that you can make something like that anyway
29 Jun 16:33
--yeah, exactly, thats whats usually meant with the difference between the terms
29 Jun 16:33
--But I'm sure that Mike could present that ship that way if he wanted too.
29 Jun 16:32
--the point was just to show what it is, communicate that as clearly as possible while also doing it in a way that pleases the eye
29 Jun 16:31
--but its still really cool and could be presented more dramatically, but that wasnt the point with that image
29 Jun 16:31
--well take that mike hill spaceship concept from earlier for example, it isnt really presented in an eye catching way (like flying through an asteroid field with explisions and stuff flying around, like it could be on a promo art for that IP), it's just a relatively plain image that just shows the thing
29 Jun 16:27
--well feng zhu always pulls that oneliner about concept art isnt about pretty pictures but what he means by that isnt that your pictures can look bad and you can still be a concept artist, there are just some very specific design jobs where it isnt at all important to set up nice lighting or a dynamic pose etc, and just make an image that solves a problem, like showing the way a door should open to a 3d modeller. but if you can't make pretty pictures you wont get a job as a concept artist,
29 Jun 16:26
--Sounds like I just need to worry about learning to draw and paint really well, so I can express my ideas and do the job properly. :-)
29 Jun 16:26
--So basically both fields need the same skill set. The only difference is whether you are illustrating a design or making a finished product.
29 Jun 16:24
--and there are fields in concept art that basically are nothing but plain illustration, like painting a full scene that will then get made into a movie frame, so the terms dont really mean anything specific anymore
29 Jun 16:23
--Mostly they were talking about people who think concept art means pretty pictures though.
29 Jun 16:23
--Ah, that makes sense. Some people talked about it like they are really different fields.
29 Jun 16:23
--well concept art is illustration to show other people what they need to make happen and illustration is an image as a final product in itself, like a book cover or a card art, but the fields overlap so much that you can do both with the skillset
29 Jun 16:21
--BTW, what is the difference between concept art and illustration, exactly? I'm guessing that my interest puts me in the conceptual artist category.
