you guys need less postmodernism and more historical materialism xD

ohh as soon as a mars colony gets its basic needs all negative aspects of humanity will show up no doubt. Such is human nature

it will probably end like in Aliens though

Very utopian

anyone going to mars wouldn't be an ignorant, uneducated individual. They could finally create a society based on cooperation not rivalry. Once the fundaments are set it will be easier to build it up. However it's true, the bigger the colony gets, the more the basic human defects will come out.

I liked Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars books exploring how that might play out.

23 Jun 17:07

but yeah a small pioneer colony on mars, it would probably be fine...for a while.

23 Jun 17:06

I think that's the immaturity thing at play. Us v them mentality always starts to make itself felt

23 Jun 17:05

Amit Dutta

--

That's a fair point. The cooperation thing probably works most efficiently for small groups of people. We tend to do less better on the larger scale. Get enough of us in one place and we seem to start bickering over everything.

what better adversity than an entire planet trying to kill you?

23 Jun 16:01

OtherMuzz

But that being said, humanity works better when they have an adversity to fight against

23 Jun 15:50

Amit Dutta

Only eachother :P

23 Jun 15:47

OtherMuzz

I think the difference is that if we go to mars, there is no ecosystem to destroy

23 Jun 15:16

If they brought back the holy roman empire, the wouldn't have to worry about wars or the eu!

23 Jun 13:14

Amit Dutta

What I don't understand is why people imagine transporting our current immaturity out to other worlds would result in any outcome different to what is happening on this planet now. XD

23 Jun 11:24

EduardoGaray

unless they go nuclear, in that case we dont need to worry either xD

23 Jun 11:23

EduardoGaray

--

i think the opposite, if there is a war coming, the eu (trough nato) will be directly responsible, but dont stress too much over it, a conventional war between nato and russia/china would be such a logistical nightmare that it probably couldnt be fought

23 Jun 11:04

Piotr Jasielski

--

eu is crap but it's still better to have it, otherwise there might be another war sometime. Colony on mars would be xtremaly cool

Adam Lina

who needs human legs?

23 Jun 08:11

Im saving up for robot legs when they become available

23 Jun 07:52

EduardoGaray

space colonies are the future, we leave mother earth alone and develop cool mechs 10/10

23 Jun 07:50

EduardoGaray

definitely!

23 Jun 07:49

Hobitt

with or without us

23 Jun 07:49

nature will eventually balance things out

23 Jun 07:48

EduardoGaray

well maybe capitalism is suicidal, but we have cheetos, you ungrateful kids dont understand

23 Jun 07:47

Hobitt

--

who needs to consider long term consequences when you can make a quick buck!

23 Jun 07:47

Hobitt

--

nah nah nah who needs that self destructive path sounds great!

23 Jun 07:46

EduardoGaray

--

or we could, you know, switch to a rational method of production xD

23 Jun 07:46

Hobitt

--

unless a self sustaining colony on mars will be made quickly enough

23 Jun 07:45

Hobitt

humans will be extinct withing a century im am sure.
