--there was a post about one of sargents portraits on gurneyjourney; he compared it to a photograph of the same person and you could see how he makes very slight caricartures of people to bring their memorable features out more, like exaggerating the cheekbones a bit to make a bony face a little bonier and bringing the personality out a bit more by deviating from the actual face on purpose
27 Mar 01:10
--hmm yeah, that's a weird statement. personality is like everything good portraits are about imo. thats why sargent is the god of portraits to me, he catches the personality and has insane painting skills aswell
27 Mar 00:56
--I was very surprised when I read in Loomis' book that to draw a good portrait one should detach from the personality of the sitter. Goya most likely wouldn't agree with that.
27 Mar 00:51
--Morning Jan! Thanks for the link to the art history channel! I'm listening to Goya vid currently
27 Mar 00:29

--good lord...haha. I can't take that responsibility Nous! Glad everyone is loving the crucible as much as we are putting it together. Also, I can't let it slip here, but we have our new judge lined up. AND HE IS A DOOZY! We will announce on the judging stream which incidentally will probably be on Sunday 27th around 8pm UTC 0. We will announce all this everywhere we can!
26 Mar 15:26
--Yeah this kind of contest really makes you work in a different way from usual. I don't usually put a lot of thoughts into planning paintings, cause I figure I'll deal with problems as they come up, but thinking things through before you do them is actually pretty useful.
26 Mar 15:18
--but i studied so hard to kill my worst weaknesses so they wouldn't be in the final image... prolly wouldnt have done that w/o the contest
26 Mar 14:55
--Man, I swear, The Crucible has made me want to study and work on my craft more than anything o_o really makes you pinpoint what needs to be improved upon yknow?! Last day here, let's go a H*A*M, Daggers!
26 Mar 14:12
--@kopper in any case nobody before the 19th century :D they didn't even allow female models in their ateliers... the women they painted look like cartoon figures lol I'd recommend Bouguereau. That's the one that all these asian artists who draw semi porn for artstation study haha but he did some amazing figures

--@V Menezes....lol I started learning art at 33, seriously at 35. You can imagine how what you said sounds to me :P Please forget the concept of too early or too late. It's fictional. There is no time schedule. You might be dead tomorrow, so enjoy what you do today however old you are. And welcome back Blunt. A recharge is a good thing to do if you need it. Now get to work and get blunted!
