But then, the only things I know about science are the pop culture stuff that gets thrown around on the internet, and a random documentary every now and then, so I can't say how credible of a claim it really is.

Yeah, that's what I'm getting at. The subconscious has its place in decision making, sure, and it's not something scary that you need to control, but claiming that our ability to make decisions is just an illusion created by our subconscious mind. and attributing *all* decision making processes to the subconscious would lead to the death of the subject, right?

I haven't seen any evidence that proves that our general idea of a free conscious will is actually real either. We have a basic intuitive impression of thinking x and then doing x, so we think thinking x is the absolute beginning point, but it might not be. Starts to get into philosophy as well, and whether you are into determinism or your views on the nature of consciousness etc

Yeah that up to 7 second delay relates to motor control decisions in the experiments that focused on it. It's not that mechanism I was thinking about

But what it actually proves isn't something about decisions in general, but about a specific type of decision.

The question of when decisions happen is more complex than the scientific experiments are able to measure, so it's simplified, and information is lost in that process. For example you have experiments where test subjects are asked to pick up an object when they chose to, and their brain activity is measured during that 'decision kaing process', and the result that test comes up with is that decisions are made before we become aware of them.

It's important to point out in that context that that doesn't mean there 's no such a thing as a conscious decision though.

Thanks! You know we mistakenly think that thinking is how we make decisions. Actually things bubble around in the subconscious a lot, and when we are ready, the decision is announced to our perception as a feeling, not a thought. There is a great talk/article about this somewhere. so....listen to your feelings Luke! :P

Cheers Amit, I'll try to give it some thought, but not too much to obstruct practice. Looking forward to Crucible also, great idea ;-)

The important thing is to just get started. In terms of your skill, prioritise what you want to do based on the needs of your goals. There is no wrong decision. I personally didn't focus on one thing at a time for quite a while. I have no idea if it helped or not, that was just how I preferred it, but focusing on one thing at a time is easier and less stressful for most

Look Nous, the fact is you will never be "good" enough to do everything you want at the same time. There will always be something to work on and develop. For IP work especially, it develops and grows as you do.

Indeed, decisions are tough though.

I think the hardest part of being an artist is knowing what to learn and how to learn efficiently than how difficult is to actually learn it

I'd advise to choose one for now. I made a mistake of doing everything, it took twice much time as it would if I focused on one thing and I'm still not really good at anything.

I find if you focus on anatomy and perspective you will learn design anyways, but that's just my experience

Essentially there's an IP I want to develop and it requires all aspects - industrial, environment and character & creature illustration. It's difficult to pin it on either one discipline.

Hi Amit - My gut says I want to do both - a lot like comics and sequential art. Scenes and character illustration!

What does your gut say? Focusing on one at a time is fine. Just because you focus on something now, doesn't mean that's it for the rest of your life.

I'm stuck in a dilemma whether to focus all my energies on characters or environments? I need help deciding, and it's a tough decision.
