Dan adviced to start from scratch and refer to references only when you're stuck. I actually had the same idea before hearing it.

You can try applying some aspect of a photo to your own painting. That's a good way of using reference to do original work

07 Mar 14:59

Amit Dutta

Every single crit I got from some uber pros, never mentioned draw more from imagination. Lol they all said draw more from reference!

07 Mar 14:58

smrr

--

Haha clients don't care how you get to the finished piece - so long as your idea is there in the thumbs and sketches

07 Mar 14:58

Hobitt

--

indeed but the end result isnot a 3/4 lit figure in a studio

07 Mar 14:57

Amit Dutta

--

whether you did it with your eyes closed and no reference, or built the entire scene in 3d

07 Mar 14:57

Lodratio

--

Hhm. there's still the fact that you are forced to actually think about things as 3d object when you draw them from imagination. you can get accurate results by using reference without understanding what it is you are replicating

No we are paid to draw whatever we are paid to draw. No one really cares how it gets spat out :)
