--well at this point im so invested in art that i dont care about money anymore ill find a way eventually
22 Dec 20:08
--like Amit said, skills alone only will take you so far, you will have to learn how to monetize those skills, the business side of things
22 Dec 20:07
--if you say so! But like I said before technical skills are only the first hurdle, and in many ways the easiest

--The success and money in our society doesn't go to the most poignant realisation of the human condition, or the most astute observation of life...it goes to whatever sells the most and brings the most profit to the fewest number. This is the world we live in. Just know that you are fighting that immense pressure when you are embarking on your idealistic journey of self expression....Not to be a downer or anything...that's just the fight ahead of you. Anyway I'm probably talking to myself right now :P

--If you really want to make money by "drawing" work in advertising or even more, medical / pharmaceutical marketing pitch and illustration. You will get thousands for a shitty 3d model with a cheesy sunset pasted behind it...
22 Dec 18:59
--There is a reason why 99% of freelancers, start out as studio artists...it's so f*in hard to make money even at intermediate / entry level freelancer...and our society is all based on the dollahs, so you gotta be able to reconcile this shit situation in the world into a journey that remians fulfilling for yourself
22 Dec 18:58
--Just responding to Sula and Gristle's chat. Maintaining a freelance career in concept art / illustration is VERY hard. You will get a wake-up call slap in the face when you actually start to move out of the "study towards the dream" phase. This is just the reality. It is not impossible, things can happen for sure, but don't expect that if you have skills alone, everything will fall into place. It ain't so.
22 Dec 16:05
--But in the end, no, you're right. If you don't need the money RIGHT NOW, it seems to be faster to keep pushing your portfolio until you can come into the industry from the front door
22 Dec 16:04
--and yes, having knowledge in Photoshop, you will probably find local opportunities. I know a few people who work retouching photos for professional photographers. They work in advertising, so they start from there.

--Meat, it boils down a choice. I could have taken an office job, but staying in the art field did pay up in the end, even if the jobs itself weren't exciting
22 Dec 15:36
--Am I deluding myself by saying I just need to waste less time, get great enough, attend events, and get noticed? Is it actually simple but just with a ton of practice work, or is it a super complicated plot twist heavy movie worthy game of thrones?
22 Dec 15:34
--Gristle: I don't know a specific one, but look through this list's anatomy ref section: http://t0h3ll4ndb4ck.blogspot.com/2013/0....html#more

--I do graphics design - it's a strong possibility you don't want to do it! But then there's the life savings issue...
22 Dec 15:28
--Sula, I think I understand what you were saying about taking on jobs in marketing and advertising, instead of only concept art for entertainment studios. However I also don't have any connections there... or anywhere.
22 Dec 15:26
--I have all of those tutorials would you believe it. Proper practice is another issue.
22 Dec 15:24
--Proko is Vilppu pupils, so I'm guessing this premium area might be awesome too.
22 Dec 15:24
--Practicing. I do those 30 min gestures/figure sketching everyday. Michael Hampton's book is pretty awesome, and there is a collection of lectures on anatomy by Vilppu that are amazing too

--Just keep in mind the feeling may never wear off hehe. Oatley advised me years ago to make peace with it. And remember to balance study with imagination stuff :)
