Sula, you're miles ahead of most, that's for certain!

22 Dec 15:14

The market today is saturated with competition. I'm basically just taking jobs I'm trained in that allow me to do something visual. It's not ideal at all. Most of my free time will be spent thinking about illustration and IP creation. It can only be a hobby now until I stack up enough mileage to present the work to a games company!

Well, even after everything I said I still feel like I haven't break in myself? lol Dammit I'm on a freelance with Riot and I still feel like a twit

22 Dec 15:10

It's going to be years before I'll make a break and I'll be no spring chicken then. It's about mileage and seizing opportunity.

Yeah, they're online afaik.

22 Dec 14:59

--

Are these agents online contractor sites? So one must compete with the world again.

22 Dec 14:59

--

I was googling some local agencies, its graphic design for the most part and I'd imagine 3D (which isn't the worst). Very little illustration is done in advertising as I can see, beyond post production.

There are also agents, I still know people who work with them, specially for international contracts

22 Dec 14:55

Ursula Dorada

People in this agencies are much more used to being cold-emailed too. At least here. You can just email, set a date and go show portfolio.

I'll soon be doing some packaging artwork for an inhouse company but it wont be as glamorous as a studio.

22 Dec 14:54

Ursula Dorada

Same way I only started to freelance for games after working for Ubisoft

22 Dec 14:53

Ursula Dorada

I got into an advertising studio here. And from there, made the connections

22 Dec 14:53

--

How did you get those jobs btw?

22 Dec 14:53

Ursula Dorada

And also learn to be market-smart. Deal with clients, contracts, payments up front, licensing options. Discipline, delivery standards and all that

22 Dec 14:52

Actually painting hyper-real it would be a good way to improve skill correct?

22 Dec 14:51

--

Ok advertising industry, sure. There are boring as hell jobs in the art field but they are the money pots.

22 Dec 14:50

Ursula Dorada

--

I spend a huge chunk in 6 years in the industry painting hiperreal fruits and flower for packaging (wafer, cookies, body lotions). Not fancy work, but they can pay easily $1500 per image

22 Dec 14:49

Ursula Dorada

no, not marketing HIM, Marketing, advertising, the industry. People who do ads for TV and posters and package art.

22 Dec 14:48

--

Rapoza made over 100,000 a year, with clever marketing, mixed with pro skill and good timing - and great connections.

22 Dec 14:48

Ursula Dorada

--

but to get in you need connections and people to recommend you anyway

22 Dec 14:47

Ursula Dorada

--

Conncetions matter a lot. Rapoza made money the same I survived - advertising. It's not concepting, it's marketing. They have budgets there

22 Dec 14:47

--

Fantasy Flight Games are not ILM they are just some cheap card company.

22 Dec 14:47

--

I was convinced there was serious money in concept art/illustration - like Rapoza. But in fairness that's only when top level connections in the movie and games industry. Match it also with well timed marketing gimmicks and you're sorted.

22 Dec 14:47

Ursula Dorada

I don't know if you can be much lower to work with Star Wars, know what I mean? This are not entry level jobs, even if they pay as such?

22 Dec 14:45

--

All the money in games is definitely inhouse, but you need to be top of your game to break in.

22 Dec 14:44

--

You mean FFG, I was wondering about that. What about box cover art for FFG?

22 Dec 14:44

Ursula Dorada

--

People who I see are making a living out of this in the US/Europe are all in-house artists, truth to be told, with a few exceptions.

22 Dec 14:43

Ursula Dorada

--

Yep, the art there is on the rise, and for them, the financial rewards pay, even more than here.

22 Dec 14:42

Ursula Dorada

--

Because damn right they're making money. How the company who is involved in the Star Wars franchise can only pay $100 per card?

22 Dec 14:42

--

I mean I'm struggling to see a future in concept art, illustration etc if most of it is shipped to Eastern Europe and Asia ( which i know for a fact it is been).

We were having this discussion over on FB a few days ago. How to make companies pay more? Because hoping for people to not take the job is not going to happen
