Those grid lines on my developing sketch I mean

03 Dec 20:56

Nestergen

No, like overlay those grids on a pic. And when I make a sketch side by side, beside the grid overlayed original. I constantly check and visualize mentally right?

No, you actually use them overtop.

Those grid lines I gotta visualize mentally right when I copy?

Which digital program do you use to draw? :) I can find a tutorial for you.

Here's another example of how it works: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/CNFIuVws5EA/hqdefault.jpg

Then you can use the lines to line up the work on either side-- You can work section-by-section, or you can just use it as a guideline. I tend to use it mainly as a guide.

Here's an example of putting a grid over a piece (Only you would obviously put the same grid over your section where you'd be drawing :)) : http://www.slrlounge.com/wp-content/uplo...verlay.png

If you're doing it traditional with pencil, then you can draw it with a ruler.

I'll do it digitally. Been running away from digital for sometime. Gotta face it soon enough.

If you're using a digital medium such as Photoshop, Krita, or Gimp, you should be able to find 'Grid' on one of the drop-down menus.

Could you show me how you grid overlay? I wanna try copying that.

03 Dec 20:51

Relating angles, looking at negative space, comparing-- These things are all things you work on when you do a copy, in my opinion. :)

I used a grid overlay on both sides and just copied it exactly. I know people recommend not 'copying', but you can study too. It's just that if you want real accuracy, you have to work on your eyes, and doing a copy does that.

And that really amped up my accuracy with observation big time.

That will improve accuracy. I spent over 30 hours on this: http://crimsondaggers.com/forum/attachme...?aid=61418

Ooh, I struggle with that too. Stopped practicing that. Kind of have a hard time remembering from memory actually. General observation is what I am focussing on. As soon as I get a bit comfy, I'll tackle that. I need to get used to the different states of awareness like looking abstractly, looking through things, looking at edges/angles etc

And as for the grid-- I mean like square grid overtop of your reference, and then using that grid for each section of the drawing to piece it together as the grand whole of it. Dealing with the drawing piece-by-piece, and working at getting every line and value perfect.

03 Dec 20:48

That's what I mean by accuracy in the brain.

03 Dec 20:48

I mean... You do an observational drawing. And then you do it again without looking at the reference. ;)

With a grid in grayscale values. Like grid it out and just copy it, but visualize those lines on paper right?

03 Dec 20:47

If you want help with accuracy, I recommend doing a few master copies with a grid in grayscale values. Really, really amps it up.

Accuracy from brain, meaning? Could you explain a bit? Just curious

03 Dec 20:46

Bookend

Well, my problem isn't accuracy from observation. It's accuracy from brain, and not relying too heavily on reference. I know reference is important/fine to use, but I tend to depend too much on it and 'copy exactly'.

03 Dec 20:46

Nestergen

But yeah, if I feel negative, all my drawing's accuracy starts dropping crazy and I start losing my observation skills. Like a downward spiral and that can be scary.

03 Dec 20:46

Nestergen

Idk why it works, but it works for me xD

03 Dec 20:45

Nestergen

Like my representational drawing accuracy.

03 Dec 20:45

Nestergen

My accuracy improved as soon as I started believing myself. Before I told myself I suck compared to others and am shit but when I said to myself, stop comparing and start having fun. Who cares if it's good or bad as long as have fun? Progress? That'll follow soon enough

03 Dec 20:45

But I guess it will come as long as I keep working at it :P

I need to work on my confidence, too... I find that when I sit down to really create something of my own, I kinda mock myself and don't really push it because I feel so out of my depth.

03 Dec 20:44

Nestergen

I kind of zone out when I'm on the internet though. Gotta fix that.

I am trying to practice plain observation and not just the observation in drawing. I find it kind of boosts confidence and increases general skills. Also writing down on a notebook how I feel when I churn out good drawings or bad drawings. How my brain feels so I kind of pin point what I should be feeling, according to Betty Edward's descriptions
