So the new CHOW will be going up Sunday, allowing for 7 days on the dot <3 sorry for the delay. In other news, considering you guys are game for CHOW's often, I'll begin posting topics consecutively after the deadline is met.

Makes sense. :) And you can always go back if you change your mind, haha. No harm in trying different directions, really. You'll learn something even if you find your way back to something you've already tried-- But, this time, knowing how to approach that style.

It's not that Loomis doesn't have good info, it's just.. it's so condensed, and his writing is so.. waffly.. I prefer the show it don't tell it.. and because I'm reading in e-book formatt I have limited attention span for it.. I need physical books. But yeah, I'm honestly just trying to diy it - not follow any books, reinvent the wheel, because I understand things better when i discover them myself

23 Sep 09:52

And if Loomis doesn't work for you, then you just gotta find another pro that fits more your style-- And there's no shame in just choosing a mentor who's even just only slightly better than you too, because you're still learning something

I totally agree, I know what you mean.

but I've found so many Ah Hah moments looking at how other people approach a problem.. it's just when the whole 'study from this book, follow this method, there is only this way to do it' stuff gets shoved at you that it's hard.. I started feeling such guilt because I fall alsspe reading Loomis, I can't /finish/ tutorials etc.. I get so much info then need to go away and digest

23 Sep 09:25

Punk-A-Cat

yep.. for me right now, my focus is still on fundamentals.. because I struggle with that mental visualisation.. but it's mileage after you've understood what it is you are supposed to be doing

That sounds great. :) And I think you can learn from anybody if you know where to look for instruction ;D

Plus he's just decided to do his own thing, and taken two years to get really good at it.. that's quite inspiring,I don't want to have to conform to someone elses style, I'll never be good at being someone else..I want to do what feels right for me

I think one of the things I like about Sycra most is he's still unhappy with his work, and not afraid to admit it, and that along with him saying learning art is HARD, has made me go a little easier on myself, not take critique personally and be open to the fact I still don't feel like I'm gatting anywhere but I'll probably always feel like that so just do stuff anyway

yup

But it's good to go back and read crits too, I think. When you get stuck, it can really be a great lightbulb effect ;D

If there's anything I've learned from pouring over sketchbooks where they went from noob-to-pro, it's that they had to turn down some crits sometimes, in favour of their process. And they got there.

>nodnod< Exactly. You gotta weigh it yourself. It's great to be open to criticism, but you can't let it rule your critical thinking and decision-making skills.

Yeah.. someone mentioned I should be more deliberate and clean with my lines in figure drawing, and I thought about it, agreed it would be good if I could, but decided as I struggle with proportion etc, clean lines are hardly going to be a useful focus right now.. all my under sketching is very sketchy, I can do clean line work, so..why make life harder

It's kinda overwhelming sometimes for -me-, at least. You should study this, you should study that.. I -know- I have a lot to do, but... XD One thing at a time, I can't do it all at once XD

23 Sep 08:58

Bookend

Awesome. ^^ Just make sure to do it your way. I notice that well-meaning people will critique and try to pull you in different directions, but you are the one who's gonna focus your work in the end.

Yeah the shark was me trying to figure out how the skin looked and the underwater thing - it was a study, but I /do/ draw animals without refs, they aren't great yet, I'm still much better at copypasta, but I'm slowly getting the structural/ skeleton stuff into my head.. I find some things easier than others, I can draw birds pretty easy, legs on anything I struggle with

23 Sep 08:50

I noticed you used a reference for that shark, and it was pretty amazing. But to really get it into your head, you need to start drawing it without the reference.

It can be overwhelming and confusing, but the point is just to keep on drawing. Keep working. And eventually, you get somewhere. I think it's important to challenge yourself-- And the best way to do that is to apply those studies.

23 Sep 08:47

Bookend

--

Well, I always say that you should temper what's 'in your heart', with what's 'in your head'. If you feel like you wanna do animals, then do them. If you feel you should also do 'the rest of it', then do it. And if you have thoughts that are interfering-- Listen to them and see how best to balance it all.

23 Sep 08:45

Punk-A-Cat

--

my problem is, I love drawing animals, but I feel like.. it's.. too easy? Like I'm not learning enough if I just do animals.. like, I /need/ everything else.. but animals are my happy place I guess.. just haven't figured the rest out yet

23 Sep 08:44

Punk-A-Cat

mmm.. it just echoed Sycra saying if he could go back in time, he'd tell himself to do what HE wants, not whateveryone else is doing/ is popular etc.. follow your joy, /then/ find a amarket for it
