Awesome.. I generally just struggle with design, I know the rules, but application seems to be a problem - same with value :D

the principles still can be used (and broken!) A lot of the design side is actually just good referencing and application of what you find so definitely feel free to go in the direction you want

Yeah Rackham is amazing! So I will be showcasing my own workflow and techniques, but when critiquing I will be really looking at doing so against the different principles rather than stylistic choices and so on. Environment design as I work in, of course is specific to games and movies so it does often fall into less stylised or a more straight representation, because that is what it will be translated into eventually.

It's anatomically correct, but it's just, more gritty I guess

Cool, I keep feeling like I need to be doing that bright shiny kiddie book digital stuff, and I honestly don't like it

It's not all accurate 3D perspective.

I love edmund dulac for example

I think what you are talking about is just style. If you want to be a bit less accurate to 3D I don't see why you can't do that...it's just that when you first start, everyone is so focused on that accurate representation

sort of on the same vein.. because this has been bugging me.. the illustrations I see - like Will terry, very rounded, very cute.. very 3d feel.. but what I personally like - old school ink, watercolour, not /flat/ but not that rendered 3d thing.. is that a problem, I keep getting 'form' thrown at me..I'm confused I guess

Yep, that would be perfect!
