Sometimes you need to take a big ole step back and ask yourself 'why a I doing this to myself, what is it achieving,' Jan - because beating on yourself leads to hitting that hump like a brick wall instead - I've just been through it, and deciding to be kinder to myself was the fix

ah yeah, but then that attitude is exactly what will get you improving...thing is to not spiral into a self-loathing as a result of seeing mistakes

Yep Em.. I've been all sorts of broke, I appreciate what I have right now so much.

Jan Kloidt

hard to just let it happen

18 Sep 09:29

Jan Kloidt

its always like that, i get super frustrated with a problem and cant move on until its fixed

18 Sep 09:29

Jan Kloidt

You've probably just hit one of those humps, and when you managed to get over it, things will look brighter again

thanks

@Punk :) oh not saying you were. Plus I should note it depends on how a person appreciates it. Having worked my way up then fallen, you develop an appreciation for everything and it's value.

Just not in advance

You will figure it out

You know Jan, your work actually has lots of promise and you are going about things well in your study. That's why I am always somehat bemused when I see people on the "right" path so down on themselves :)

18 Sep 09:28

Jan Kloidt

just not sure if thats what i want

18 Sep 09:27

Jan Kloidt

so i'd have no problem being a designer and making stuff for other people

18 Sep 09:27

Jan Kloidt

--

its not that im too attached to my work, its the opposite. i hate it and i want to make things that satisfy me

18 Sep 09:27

Punk-A-Cat

Yeah I wasn't belittling it's value Em.. just that the aim to be rich and famous.. often leads to dissatisfaction when reached

18 Sep 09:27

Amit Dutta

--

Well yeah for sure, but thinking about attachment when it comes to design vs art or illustration doesn't really make sense. You definitely shouldn't be so attached in either realm

18 Sep 09:26

Jan Kloidt

--

engaged, but not attached

18 Sep 09:25

Amit Dutta

You can't remove yourself from anything you do...and if you do...why are you doing that? You should be fully engaged in everything you do in your life, otherwise that is the lie, and that is the "selling out" if such a thing even exists

I think we need to stop considering money as a strictly materialistic value. Being part of modern society we're no longer a trade and barter system, money allows us a more versatile management of how we live. Depending on what you do you could live week by week like me or have a fulltime job and study or suppliment work etc. It's not the dollar value that's important, but how it allows you the flexibility to do anything and everything you intend to do.

Hmm.. I guess I didn't see it that way.. maybe I don't see art that way either.. design was creating harmony.. art is sort of the same, creating narrative and harmony.. idk.. I love the process of creation, doesn't matter so much what's being made

18 Sep 09:24

Jan Kloidt

--

thats the cool thing about just approaching it as design, you can just remove yourself from it completely. paint a dragon? problem fixed, thats what they wanted. its that kind of thing

18 Sep 09:23

Jan Kloidt

--

i didnt wanna say that design is easy, just that you dont need to worry if you see yourself in your work. its good if it fixes the problem, but id doesn't need to be YOU

18 Sep 09:21

Punk-A-Cat

But if you enjoy it, it's great

Punk-A-Cat

Honestly, having /been/ a designer.. it's not that simple, clients are generally ignorant buggers who want miricles for nothing.. no job is ever as easy as it looks on the outside

18 Sep 09:20

Jan Kloidt

--

yes, fuck art direction :D

18 Sep 09:19

Jan - that's Art Direction. Get promoted and then you're sweet :D

Become the fad, don't chase the fad... money isn't evil, we are allowed to make money and still be artists.. the starving artist myth is just that.. and hell, if you enjoy design, do that jan, and do art as a hobby

18 Sep 09:18

Jan Kloidt

--

i wish i could just remove art from the equasion. then i'd just be a designer and my goal would just be to make clients happy. easy life

18 Sep 09:17

Punk-A-Cat

But don't chase the latest fad.. that way lies ruin, because fads come and go, and unless you want to be forever one step behind,...
