--im just debating with myself right noow if i wanna go through years of making stupid work for years until im good enough that i can do whatever i want or if i just want to study and make money from non art jobs until i can just skip the bullshit

--One of the only good things I realised when working full time and doing art on the side was that it actually freed my artwork from the pressure of having to make money off it. So I just developed organically and as I wanted with a bit less stress. Of course having a soul sucking job isn't fun, but then again everything is about perspective

--If you're proliffic illustrator with several publications under your belt and you're bankrupt - then you can worry.

--*nod* And when it comes down to it, you can't earn, be it money or experience, from what you never try or complete.
18 Sep 08:27
--unfortunately that's where the stress lies, when it comes to trying to link art to making money, when you can't do it easily at first because the skills aren't there yet
18 Sep 08:25
--I think the nuance is being lost.....if you let fear of not making money, or the worry of money always override your instincts then that won't lead anywhere good. Worry for the sake of worry is absolutely pointless
18 Sep 08:25
--But it's a step back, it's separated earning money from doing art, and acknowledging that art is definitely what I want to persure. - I think that separation of thought is very important.

--Food is nice. And as of this week having medical treatment is nice too. Working four jobs, not so nice. And it eats all time and energy.

--if you dont worry about money you are going to starve, no matter what you do or how good you are
18 Sep 08:22
--just wonder how that could keep you going, if that's the most important thing.
18 Sep 08:22
--I often say that if your goal is to make money doing art, then you might need to shift priorities. I mean, if you wanna make money, be a lawyer or something, right? (Even that is a stereotype), but I mean... Art is more than that. It really should be something you actually want to do for its own sake. I've actually had this argument before with a rather materialistic pessimist. I was shocked that anyone would be primarily focused on money when they are working towards being good at art-- I

--Then I became a career artist....so your desire while good motivation in some ways, can actually completely F U UP!
18 Sep 08:20
--I think it is very easy for us to get so caught up in the art identity and the struggle it becomes everything about us, and can consume us. I went nuts myself, because of this pressure, until I literally gave up the desire to "become a career artist". And funniiy enough art just became a way to enjoy and express myself, and made the journey smoother
18 Sep 08:20
--For instance I kind if stumbled into concept art, it's more an option for me than an intended career. The only artists I know by name are freelance and do a miriade of tasks.
18 Sep 08:18
--I have to open up my shop soon so I just wanted to explain why I asked - I've recently been considering what drives artists to do work like that and still be known for independent work. The artist statements being thrown about in convo helped a bit in getting there. I think if you establish the core essential theme of your work you can get away with doing anything without making you a 'sell-out' or it draining on what creative juices you want for your independent work.
18 Sep 08:17
--everything i thought my career should be seems so empty to me now, concept art is a pile of shit
18 Sep 08:15
--I think you have to make yourself a niche of 'the thing you enjoy' and try and get work there
18 Sep 08:15
--and if you wanna do that on the side all your other work feels like you are lying to yourself to survive
18 Sep 08:14
--What sort of impact do you normally expect of your work Jan? No matter what it ends up as, is there a particular theme or thought or impresssion intrinsic to you that you want to sho?

--it so hard to just not give a fuck and do your thing if you need to worry about money
