--its so hard
18 Sep 08:12
--i still feel like i have no idea where i wanna go with my art. i dont wanna sell out and produce meaningless shit to survive and i also dont wanna try to be original just for originality's sake and starve
18 Sep 08:11
--For example, I hate Andy Warhol, I don't hold the same feeligs for Pop and Installation art in general.
18 Sep 08:11
--And each work pertains to the artist as an individual. Lumping a whole collective is naive.
18 Sep 08:09
--a lot of that post war/mid war stuff has a really dark origin, you have to take that into context, it was a cry in the dark against the horror
18 Sep 08:07
--I'm still in love with the 'water fountain'... to me that was the boldest piece of 'making a statement' that I've seen - but yes, very much a case of if you don't understand the context and the era it was made in..
18 Sep 08:07
--Reminds me a song, in the end there's a broadcastor talking about art. 'Vulgar, not vulgar, who are we to decide, it is not up to us, to be the judge of times".
18 Sep 08:05
--but its so hard to bring together, i have no idea how to do it but i wish it could be fused
18 Sep 08:04
--ironically thats exactly how some modernists thought about art as it was done by sargent etc
18 Sep 08:03
--i dont mind if anyone hates modern art. if you dont like it, thats your right. im just mad that these are artists and they dont care about their immediate history.
18 Sep 08:02
--one guy seemed to want to stay in the background (and he was clearly the smartest one, i saw his talk and it was brilliant) but the others explicitly agreed
18 Sep 08:01
--Agreed or just went "Yeah ok... moving on" or did they form a parallell opinion?
18 Sep 08:00
--I do notice that in a lot of panels, group talks and seminars etc. There's usually that one person why speaks just to hear themselves talk, not add anything of any value.
18 Sep 08:00
--trojan horse was a unicorn happening right now. no names tho, dont wanna shittalk the guy
18 Sep 07:59
--context is everything. the reason why modern art is so inaccessible and "elitist" is that you always need the context to understand it. its almost always reacting on something else and if you dont know the context it just looks like they didnt know how to paint and try to sell it to some idiots who buy everything. thats just not the way it is
18 Sep 07:56
--I think all artists should do at least art history 101, or go even deeper if they enjoy it, but knowing what has happened to art through the ages, why medieval art was so flat etc, it's important, you can look at that art and summarily say 'that's bad, no perspective'.. but once you understand why they were painting like that, you look at it in a whole new light
18 Sep 07:52
--ugh, yes, and when you have people who look up to him, there will be more emulation of that ignorance
18 Sep 07:51
--but he talks as if he knew the topic and everything was just trash judged by his standarts
18 Sep 07:50
--if he would have just said "i dont know not enough about the topic to speak about it" i wouldnt have the slightest problem about it
18 Sep 07:49
--So what you're saying Jan, is THU should have vetted their speakers better by giving them the art history 101 test?
18 Sep 07:42
--all the painters i look up to have educated themselves all around. you can just see it in their work, the way they talk, everything
