Take some time to look at the gesture of artist you like, and come up with a reason why you like them. Then go focus on that while you draw your own gestures. Gestures are way too short-hand for you to get much out of from copying.

yes

so, would it be good practice to strive for understanding of why the artist made the decisions he/she did when creating the piece being analyzed under the lens of what you're trying to learn exclusively? Or would consideration of all elements of art in tandem/complimenting one another with a focus on the aspect you're trying to learn be a more fruitful choice?

and each time before you start, think what you're studying this time - motion or the simplification of the body shapes?

Pax: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kfK46nruKM ; as for gestures, draw your own gestures from timed figure drawing videos on YouTube or similarly timed human body reference websites.

What methods are commonly used in order to break down and analyze how one would tackle a certain aspect of art? I'm trying to figure out gesture. Right now I'm copying vilppu's gesture and doing my own in about a 1:1 ratio. Is there a more sound way of learning this aspect of art? Or is this methodology of learning gesture sound? Also, who are some great artists of the figure that I should study?
