--That's a business mindset though. Being successful as a Creative is more what impact you leave than what your bank account reads.

--Success is more a frame of mind too - being paid less but loving your job and lifestyle has to beat being paid really well but not loving what you are doing and where you have to live yeah?

--Especially with larger studios. It's not just a scale of how good you are, because more than one artist will be working over the same product. So long as you can get the concept and do the job, refining comes after.

--When it comes to being 'successful' this is an opinion, but still an observation, I think it more comes down to who you know, not what you earn.
14 Sep 08:28
--Few points - some people do steuggle with sarcasm. It actually requires a particular part of the brain to be as developed in order to process it. 3D foundations for 2D illustration is very popular, used mainly by professionals who know how precious time is and know their composition to the T.

--I wouldn't dare try this in say California. I'd be out on the street in no time.
14 Sep 08:26
--Splitting the rent by doing a couple shitty jobs a month, and still being able to study for the most part full time..not too bad.
14 Sep 08:26
--if you feel like you are making progress or wouldnt mind doing something like that for longer, thats completely fine. this one really depends on your individual goals and where you want to take yourself and your work
14 Sep 08:26
--I think as long as you continue to study and push yourself with personal work, or entering competitions, you're going to keep moving forward
14 Sep 08:25
--I dunno, I'm not exactly hating where I'm at. I'm pretty glad I don't have to work at say kmart.
14 Sep 08:24
--i agree punk but its not a place where you want to stay. its better to study and sustain yourself with a dayjob than to do work that wont get you anywhere and halts your progress
14 Sep 08:23
--Unless you are working for an art director, in which case they will bust your balls if you produce sub par work becausethey do know
14 Sep 08:22
--I think it's probably a very strong line that divides clients from artists. The fact that they don't know the amount of work, time, and effort going into it.. And they don't necessarily know a good piece when it bites them on the nose ;D
14 Sep 08:22
--I think it's good to get your feet wet doing small less well paid commissions - you get your head around the pitfalls etc without it being too stressful
14 Sep 08:21
--im doing this because i love art and it means something to me and if a client cant respect that they can try to get work from someone else
14 Sep 08:20
--you want to be in the position where you are not depending on them or they'll squeeze you like a wet sponge
14 Sep 08:20
--Yep Jan, if you look professional and act professional, you get treated as such
14 Sep 08:20
--I'm taking the same approach, Jan. I want to be at the point where I can be hired, and I feel that my work is strong, before I actually go out and find work.. Not that I'm anywhere near that point :)
14 Sep 08:20
--There's going to be clients that never will respect your work, it's all subjective
14 Sep 08:19
--and charge for any extras over that poiint.. because that was the absolute bain of my life.. had a client who decided a complete redesign of her website a year later came under the 'two free revisions'
14 Sep 08:19
--thats because i want to be good before i take work. if they dont respect your work they dont respect you and then its a struggle
14 Sep 08:18
--I work in a library. It's temporary, but I really love it. The people you run into don't want to bleed you, lol.
14 Sep 08:17
--You'll get shitty clients anyway Jan, I worked in web design long ehough t be able to tell you pretty much every client you get is going to be an asshole at some point.. and not because they are trying to be, just because they either think they know more than you do about what you are doing and try to mircomanage, or because they are clueless and ask for the impossible instantly
14 Sep 08:17
--It's the struggle to reach a decent quality which is something we approach in blind faith. For instance, I do not know how long it will take for my work to be good enough which is something intangible that is hard to quantify!
14 Sep 08:17
--i got a dayjob that doesnt make me hat my life. cant ask for much more than that :D
