I've always felt a kind of synchronicity to Vilppu's style, although to watch his videos, I really needed subtitles because he kind of meanders a bit. :)

Yeah, I've got my physical sketchbook out and I'm gonna draw along and take notes and stuff. I like this approach just fine, and the references are really great. Just awesome resources.

Then again, in the schoolism videos, they do like explain things you can do for learning, not too sure how the format of explanation goes for NMA videos though.

Think of it like the way schoolism is going right now;

NMA is more of a self study approach than handout approach of what you need to do,

Lots of references in general-- Tons. And videos. But, not a lot of pdfs or writing. Looks like you do that through videos.

I would do all of the above.

For anyone who's subscribed to New masters academy-- How do you generally take the videos? Do you watch them, take notes, draw along, and/or all of the above?

Having a philosophy doesn't change the quality of your work or performance. If anything, it will make it better.

11 Sep 00:39

Bookend

It's good to have a philosophy, and to keep it in mind. If you lose track of why you're doing what you're doing, and where you want to end up, then you can lose your integrity and become confused with illusions of things that only seem important at the time.

:) that being said, I'll still work my ass off to improve, that is to make my art the thing I want it to be, to live the life I want to live and to be the person I want to become. I'm just being open again to not deciding what any of these things are going to be and how I'm going to get there.

11 Sep 00:29

Bookend

Yeah, makes sense, Jan. Don't allow yourself to get too dependent on any one technique or tool. :)

11 Sep 00:27

Jan Kloidt

--

yeah. the idea is to question the general idea of "improvement" and what "getting better" really means. those techniques will make you faster and make your stuff look more real and more detailed and all that but they will make you depend on them more and more. It's like what every tool has ever done to mankind: If you start using it it will shape you after it's own image not the other way around. If you want to live your life your way you need to do it your way. Fuck this stupid art positivism.

I generally just ignore this 'rat race'. I'll improve and get there and be awesome, and I'll pick up the techniques that make sense to me. I'll adapt, but I won't bend over backwards if it's not going to improve my work.

just a thought that kept me busy lately and I need to get out: FUCK THEM! fuck the rat race, fuck being up to date, fuck making it comfortable for everyone else, fuck trying to be as employable as possible. Fuck everybody who's calling you a purist for not using the latest and most efficient and most powerful technique. Fuck their petty goals, fuck their meaningless motivations. Don't give in to their fucked up mindset. Do whatever feels right to you, and you'll survive your way.
