to be honest, the whole figure drawing thing is that for me, majorly out of my comfort zone, been very humbling and depressing at times. But to do the kind of art I want to do, I /have/ to get my head around perspective and anatomy

Punk-A-Cat

oh yes

07 Sep 08:49

Bookend

Sure can. ^^ But it busts the ego a lot.

Punk-A-Cat

Yeah, stepping out of the comfort zone can teach you a lot.. :D

For me, it seems to be about getting uncomfortable and trying different things.

My figure drawing is slowly improving now I'm trying to do more from recall, I dunno f it will ever be a strong point for me, but I shall continue to try and apply it and see what happens

Punk-A-Cat

Yeah, it's getting it into your long term memory - which involves both repetition and recall..

07 Sep 08:41

Bookend

It's like.. "Ugghh.. How many women's hips have I drawn, and yet I can't remember this one stupid liinnee.." And then I look it up, and I'm like, OHhhhh.. And then I never forget. XD

07 Sep 08:40

The trick is to remember what I've done. XD

But I'm finding, to my surprise, that it's helped in a lot of other ways as well

07 Sep 08:39

I think what copying helped me with the most was observation.

I agree. :)

Some things just requires brute force repetition than others.

So I feel like I'm finally studying the -right- way. Not that there's a wrong way, but. The 'right' way for me.

Brian Hermelijn

Well not sure if I agree with that, because for gesture drawing, just one example, I copied a ton during 3 months period, from huston, villpu, and some others

07 Sep 08:38

Bookend

And I couldn't do that without having done hundreds of copies..

07 Sep 08:38

Bookend

Yeah, copying isn't all bad. It's when all you do is copying that it's kinda.. Limited. Since I've started actually forcing myself to try drawing stuff from what I remember of copying, and struggle, and look stuff up-- That's when I benefit most.

ah, well.. I suppose I'm more looking at a thing and going 'mm shadows there, what colour are they actually, and what is the flow of the feathers/ fur, and how reflective is that and' it can't be mindless really

Oh and this one, http://muddycolors.blogspot.com/2015/09/...-game.html

Punk-A-Cat

my next few challenges are going to be copying some lizards, because I want to do a really nice detailed dragon.. and man, scales and lizard skin, still tricky stuff

07 Sep 08:35

Because you're going, "I'm not being mindless, I am totally noticing that this line is longer than this line, and.. Lalalala.. Uhh.. What was I doing again? " XD

Since we're talking about practicing/studying, I think this is a good small read ;) http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2...er-to-son/

I suppose.. In THEORY.

07 Sep 08:34

Punk-A-Cat

though it's never actually mindless - I think if you copy, and be mindful, it's all good?

You're lucky Punk :D It's cool when you've already got a skill you can be confident in
