--Personal commissions can pay very well and it's easier to go from that point into --> "well I can offer you the following standard rates for B&W/sketch/full painting". If they don't tell you their budget, or say they have no clue how to price art, don't be afraid of quoting industry rates. ArtPact is a good source for these.

--Always always always ask the client for a quote first! A good way to phrase it "what is your budget for this project?" or "let me know what budget you have in mind for this commission, and I will be able to give you a quote within a day"
