And don't think about it as scaring people with numbers -- think about it as gently educating clients, I have had clients refuse my rates only to come back one or two months later, with even bigger jobs :)

07 Sep 06:38

vlada

Yeah, and it gives you an idea of how seriously they want your art ;) Don't underprice yourself!

Then you know how to play your hand

07 Sep 06:37

jsel

I guess that kind of like seeing what cards their playing with first.

Jessica Hische has a great article here: http://www.jessicahische.is/thinkingthou...outpricing

Yeah, you need to establish a baseline to haggle from -- and clients that commission art with some regularity (also publishers, etc) will give you their budget first.

07 Sep 06:35

jsel

Ahh, yeah that's good advise. I'd rather see the number they have in their mind first.

07 Sep 06:34

vlada

Personal commissions can pay very well and it's easier to go from that point into --> "well I can offer you the following standard rates for B&W/sketch/full painting". If they don't tell you their budget, or say they have no clue how to price art, don't be afraid of quoting industry rates. ArtPact is a good source for these.

Always always always ask the client for a quote first! A good way to phrase it "what is your budget for this project?" or "let me know what budget you have in mind for this commission, and I will be able to give you a quote within a day"

Yeah that is true, I don't have anything to lose by going higher.

but especially if you weren't looking for the job/don't desperately need the money, better ask for a little more than you'd be comfortable working for, it's likely he'll try to beat down the price anyway

still, him not being able to offer a decent amount is the worst case scenario (of course, that doesn't mean you should _accept_ less than a decent amount)
