Just curious, but isn't Velvet Revovlers essentially Abandoned Hideout? Since they both serve the same purposes?

he'd always be as poetic and vague as possible about everything so nobody would see he's a fraud lol. poor students

if they don't give instructions, it's usually because they don't know how to do it themselves :D and if you ask them, it's to "explore your individual creativity" haha. I've had a teacher who would sit on a tiny chair and read french poetry out loud to inspire people in a live drawing session instead of instructing. the man couldn't even draw. and when I asked him what he does, he said "I'm a generalist"

Yep Lodratio, you can blame school for people hating watercolours. It's a pretty tough medium if you don't know what you're doing, but in school you're forced to use it and you dont get any instructions - gah, it made me hate watercolours so much. Everyone was longing to just be allowed to draw in pencil, for once.

if it's just a sketchbook and you're not worried by a bit of buckling it's all good, just don't soak the paper, the sketchbooks I have at that weight will start to pill and rip if they gett toooo wet

Thanks Punk, ill try and only do a light wash.. I guess i wont know until i give it a go :) need to finish off my ink sketch from last night first

110gsm paper will warp if you get it too wet, if you are colouring over ink, you can generally get away with keeping the colours less wet, the paper will probably still get waves in it anyway, but not like if you put a wet wash on it. You need around 300gsm to take a good soaking without needing to tape it down

smrr sometimes I draw with my eyes or my minds eye you could say. You look at a subject and break it down visually in your mind. Find the gesture, construction lines, core shadow ect. Its actually good practice.

Lodratio, I was thinking of using a black, or single colour to shade some sketches :) i might try it in my sketchbook, its 110gsm, ill see how it holds up!

The reason might be that people are forced to paint with them in school. I didn't touch a colored pencil for years because of school, and I know people who just hate art in general thanks to art classes. I think watercolors might be the painting equivalent of sketching with a pen. you got to nail your bushstrokes because you can't make a whole lot of corrections, but if you just go with it and try to improve from one painting to another you'll figure out an approach that works over time.
